Kisii University College was established in 1965 as a Primary Teachers Training College on a 61-acre piece of land donated by the County Council of Gusii.
The institution operated as a primary teachers’ college until 1983, when it was upgraded to a Secondary Teachers College, offering diploma programs.

In 1994, the Government of Kenya assigned Egerton University to oversee the college as its campus.
In 1999, the Faculty of Commerce launched the Bachelor of Business and Management, marking the first-degree program within the campus.

This degree program ran alongside the Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE), which was eventually phased out in 2001.
Kisii University College was established through a Government Legal Notice No.163 of 2007 as a constituent College of Egerton University on August 23, 2007.

On February 6, 2013, Former President Mwai Kibaki through Legal Notice No 225 granted Kisii University Charter in accordance with the Universities Act 2012
Kisii University is home to eight diverse schools, each offering a range of academic programs designed to equip students with the skills required for various professional fields.
These include the School of Arts and Social Sciences, School of Business and Economics, School of Education and Human Resource Development, School of Health Sciences, School of Information Science & Technology, School of Law, School of Pure and Applied Sciences, and School of Agriculture and Natural Resources Management.

8 Schools in Kisii University and Courses Offered
The School of Agriculture and Natural Resources Management offers programs in agricultural education, extension, and rural development, including a PhD in Agricultural Education and Extension.
Students can also pursue a Master’s or bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Extension (AGED), a degree in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development, or a Diploma in Agricultural Economics, among other programs.
In the School of Arts and Social Sciences, students can specialize in disciplines like Psychology, Political Science, History, Geography, Sociology, and Philosophy.
The school offers advanced degrees such as a PhD in History and Geography, as well as master’s and bachelor’s degrees in history and Geography.
The School of Health Sciences prepares students for careers in medicine and health. With a variety of specialized programs, students can pursue degrees in Clinical Medicine, pharmacy, Public Health, Nursing, and Biomedical Sciences.
Others include Medical Laboratory science, nursing, medicine and surgery, nutrition and dietetics
The school offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including a PhD in Biomedical Sciences, and a Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences.
There are also options for upgrading clinical medicine degrees and direct entry into other health programs.
The School of Information Science and Technology focuses on equipping students with expertise in media, communication, and IT.
Students can pursue advanced degrees like a PhD in Media and Communication, as well as a master’s in information science, Communication Studies, or a bachelor’s degree in communication and media.
There is also a range of programs in Information Systems and Technology, including a PhD in Information Systems, a Master of Information Systems, and bachelor’s degrees in computer science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, and Applied Computer Science.
Additionally, students can pursue Diplomas in Information Technology and Computer Science.
Students can also study for a Master of Information Science, as well as bachelor’s degrees in information science or Diplomas available in Journalism & Mass Communication and Library and Information Science.
In the School of Education, students are prepared for careers in teaching with programs such as the Bachelor of Education (Primary Option) and Bachelor of Education (Special Needs Education).
The school also offers the Bachelor of Education (Arts) in various subjects, including English, Literature, Mathematics, Geography, History, Business, Kiswahili, and Religion.
Additionally, the school provides a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction, as well as a PhD in Curriculum (Curriculum & Instruction or Instruction & Media).

The School of Business offers a range of advanced programs. Students can pursue a PhD in Business Administration or a PhD in Procurement & Logistics Management, or tourism management.
Master’s degree options include a Master of Business Administration, MSc in Project Management, MSc in Purchasing & Logistics, Human Resource Management and MSc in Project Monitoring & Evaluation.
For undergraduate studies, students can choose from a Bachelor of Commerce, Business Management, Economics and Statistics, Project Management Monitoring & Evaluation, Business Information Management, Human Resource Management and Purchasing & Supplies Management.
The school also offers several diploma courses, including Diplomas in Accounting and Finance, Tax Consultancy, Financial Risk Management, Tour/Hotel & Hospitality Management, Human Resource Management and Financial Analysis.
The School of Applied Sciences offers bachelor’s programs in fields like Physics, Geophysical and Mineralogy, Renewable Energy, with opportunities for advanced study at the PhD and master’s levels in Physics.
Additional courses offered include Bsc in Biology (Zoology & Botany), Cellular and Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Forensic Science, Conservation Biology, Microbiology, Laboratory Science, and Biotechnology.
The school also offers programs in Actuarial Science, Mathematics and Computing, Applied Statistics, Biometry and Informatics, and Mathematics with specializations in Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Statistics.
More programs offered are BSc in Analytical Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Chemistry, Petroleum Chemistry, and Environmental Chemistry.
Finally, the School of Law at Kisii University offers a Bachelor of Laws (LL. B) program, available only in September, along with a Diploma in Law offered during both the January and September intakes.
Kisii University has a main campus near Kisii Town and several satellite campuses in Eldoret, Kericho, Migori, Kapenguria and Nairobi.
The university also had campuses in Nyamira, Ogembo, Keroka, Isebania, and Kehancha, which were closed to comply with a government directive.
Kisii University’s main campus is located in Bosango, within the Gusii Highlands of Kenya, approximately 2 km from Kisii Town Centre, off the Kisii-Kilgoris Road.
