Alfred Nganga Mutua is a Kenyan politician who served as the Cabinet Secretary of Tourism and Wildlife since October 2023.
Early life and Education of Alfred Mutua
Mutua was born and bred in Machakos County in Masii town on August 22, 1970. He went to school at Dagoretti High School (O level) and Jamhuri High School (A level).

At the age of 15, Mutua had his first piece published in a daily newspaper while still in high school. He started producing features for The Sunday Nation, The Standard, and The Kenya Times newspaper.
He founded his first business, Golden Dreams Company, at the age of 19, and started putting out the magazine dubbed “Golden Times.”

Alfred has a BA in Journalism from Whitworth College in the United States and an MSc in Communication from Eastern Washington University.
Additionally, Mutua received his doctorate in Communication and Media from the University of Western Sydney in Australia.
Similarly, he has lived, studied, and worked in Kenya, the US, Australia, and the UAE.
Moreover, he has held positions as a journalist, businessman, professor, government official, and politician in Kenya, the US, Australia, and the UAE.
He was a lecturer in Daystar University, Kenya, University of Western Sydney, Australia, Macquarie University, Australia and Zayed University, UAE.
Life before politics
Before his debut in politics, Mutua was a journalist and a filmmaker working around the world. He was a foreign correspondent and a travel features writer.
Mutua is best known in Kenya for producing Kenya’s first Action movie series, Cobra Squad and the TV series Beba Beba.
In addition, he has authored a financial self-help book, ‘How To Be Rich in Africa’ and ‘Other Secrets of Survival’ and was the publisher of the popular fashion magazine, Passion Magazine.
Alfred Mutua Political Career
The seasoned journalist made his debut in the political scene when he was appointed the Official Government Spokesman between 2002 and 2012.
In 2013, he vied and won the seat of Governor of Machakos County becoming its first governor under Kenya’s new Constitution.
Elected under the Wiper Democratic Movement Party ticket, Mutua served as governor up until 2017.
He vied for the same position in 2017 and won serving as governor until 2022. While leading Machakos County, Mutua was named Kenya’s best-performing governor in 2015, 2019, and 2020.
He also formed and led the Maendeleo Chap Chap political party.
In September 2020, Mutua announced his candidature for the 2022 presidential election committing to help Kenyans enhance their wealth and bring an end to corruption.
However, he withdrew his bid declaring his support for William Ruto’s presidential bid in 2022.
In September 2022 after being declared the 5th President of Kenya, Ruto nominated Mutua Cabinet Secretary of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs.
In 2023 October, Ruto reshuffled his cabinet, moving Mutua to Tourism and Wildlife Ministry.
Outside politics, Mutua is an aviation, fitness and sports enthusiast. He is also a martial arts expert with expertise in Shotokan Karate, Tae-Kwondo and Temple Kung-fu.
