Biography
Amason Kingi is the Speaker of the Senate of Kenya. His appointment to the role came after his main competitor, former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka withdrew from the race.
He became the third speaker after Kenneth Lusaka, who presided over the house, and Ekwe Ethuro, the pioneer speaker.
Education
Amason attended Magarini primary school before he proceeded to Alliance Boys High School in 1989 where completed his secondary school education.
Thereafter, he enrolled at the University of Nairobi for a bachelor’s degree in law. Later, Kingi joined the Kenya School of Law where he graduated in 1998.
Political Career of Amason Kingi
Before the 2013 polls, he served in various ministerial positions under the coalition government of ODM leader Raila Odinga and former president Mwai Kibaki.
Prior to his role as the speaker of the senate, Kingi served as the Governor of Kilifi County from 2013 to 2022.

Additionally, he worked as the District Coordinator for Kilifi District under the Constitution of Kenya Reform Commission (CKRC).
Amason also served in the Ministry of Fisheries Development as a Minister, taking over Paul Otuoma from 2010-2013.
In 2003, he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Magarini Constituency and served until 2013.
Similarly, he served as the Minister for East African Community Affairs from 2008 to 2010 and later as the Governor of Kilifi County for 10 years.
Kingi made headlines when he banned discos at all social events in Kilifi County. He is also recognized for the remarkable development the county experienced during his tenure.
During his tenure, his love for legislation and democracy is evident in how he ran the Kilifi County government. The county was the only one to hold public participation before passing the controversial Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) bill.
