Anne Kananu is a Kenyan politician who served as the governor of Nairobi County after Senators upheld the impeachment of Mike Sonko.
On January 9, 2025, Kananu again hit the headlines after the Public Service Commission (PSC) shortlisted her for the Principal Secretary job pursuant to the provisions of Article 115(3)a of the constitution.

Anne Kananu Mwenda was born in 1980 in Embu County. She did her Kenya certificate of Primary Education at St. Michael’s Primary School and later attended Our Lady of Mercy Secondary School where she completed in the year 1999.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in criminology and security management from Dedan Kimathi University which she obtained in 2016. In 2013, she pursued a Diploma in Criminology and Security Management from St. Paul’s University.
In addition, she completed two other certificate courses in Human Resource Management and Public relations at the esteemed University of Nairobi between 2011 and 2012.
She has a certificate in Crisis Management from AVSEC, Female Screening, and Man Portable Air Defense Systems (Man pads Training) from US Department of Homeland Security.

Anne Kananu made headlines when she was nominated by the then Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko to serve as the Deputy Governor in Nairobi County in 2020.
This is after Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe quit. In 2021 she took over the governor role after the Governor Mike Sonko was impeached by senators.
She made history as the first female Governor in Nairobi County. Her political leadership skills were enhanced during her tenure as the Nairobi County Governor.
She has worked as a personal assistant at H. Mogambi and Co Advocates and at Mokir Enterprises as a personal assistant and Customer Service between the 2002 and 2003.
Anne Kananu has worked as a security officer in charge of quality control and training at the Kenya Airports Authority for 13 years. She has a vast knowledge background in security and over 17 years of experience in both public and private sector.
She also held the role of Chief Officer for Disaster Management and Co-ordination and the Acting Chief Officer for Water, Energy and sanitation. which she made big strides in.
