BIOGRAPHY
Ferdinand Omanyala is a Kenyan sprinter, world record holder and the eighth fastest man in the world in 100m.
Education background
Ferdinand Omanyala went to the Friend’s school Kamusinga in Bungoma county. He later joined the University of Nairobi Chiromo campus in 2015, to pursue bachelor’s degree in science and chemistry. He deferred his studies at UoN to pursue athletics.
Family
Ferdinand Omanyala is engaged to he’s fiancée Laventa Amutavi who is a 100m sprinter and a long jumper. They are blessed with a son Quinton Finn Omanyala.
Career Journey of Omanyala
Omanyala started his athletics career in Kenya back in 2016 while he was a first-year student in the university of Nairobi, where he registered his first run in Mumias-Kenya and later won.
In 2017, he made his first Kenyan team to the Bahamas world relay. In the same year he received a 14 -month suspension following a doping offence. Omanyala tested positive to the prohibited substance betamethasone after he underwent treatment for his back and the doctor prescribed him medicine that contained the substance without knowing it was banned in athletics.
The 100m sensation later qualified for the 2020 summer Olympics in Tokyo-Japan, where he ran 10:00 seconds in the semifinals of the 100 meters, setting a new national record. He later attained his personal best of 9.86 seconds in Pramtalstadion : Andorf -Austria becoming the first Kenyan to ever break the 10-second barrier.
Additionally, on 30 March 2021 at Yabatech sports complex in Lagos, Nigeria he set a national record of 10:01 seconds winning the 100 meters. He also set a record of 10:06 seconds in South Africa.
Furthermore, he also clocked 9.77 seconds at the Absa Kip Keino classic continental tour in Nairobi, on 8th, September ,2021. Omanyala wowed Kenyans on 30 July 2022 after he won men’s 100 meters gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.
In 2023 ,Omanyala proceeded to his South African tour, where he won two races he was competing in. He started with the ASA Athletics Grand Prix 1 before also dominating in the ASA Athletics Grand Prix 2.
However, Omanyala has experienced some setbacks in he’s career with the major one being the world championships in Budapest, Hungary.
He took part in the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
