Biography
Professor Githu Muigai, is a Kenyan lawyer and was the Attorney General (AG) of the Republic of Kenya until February 13, 2018, when he resigned.
Muigai is also a senior partner at Mohammed Muigai LLP. He specializes in Public International Law, Constitutional Law, Criminal, Civil and Commercial litigation.
In addition, he has curved a niche in arbitration where he has over 36 years in handling arbitral proceedings domestically, regionally and internationally under ICSID Rules, UNCITRAL Rules, the CIARB London and CIARB Kenya Rules, NCIA Rules and under the New York Convention.
Educational Background of Githu Muigai
Prof. Githu Muigai attended St. James, Kiambu Primary School between 1967 and 1973. Thereafter, he joined Githiga Secondary School in 1974 and completed O-level education in 1977 with East African Certificate of Education.
Later, he joined Meru High School from 1978-1979 for his East African Advanced Certificate of Education.
The professor holds an LLB and a PhD from the University of Nairobi, an LLM from the Colombia University Law School and Diploma in law from the Kenya School of Law. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb).
Githu was called to the Bar in 1985. He specializes in public procurement law, corporate finance, civil and commercial litigation.
Likewise, he is a recognized company on bank securities. In addition to the practice of Law, he is the immediate former Attorney General of the Republic of Kenya.
Professional Career
Prof. Githu Muigai, a former Attorney General of Kenya, served as an associate professor of public law at the University of Nairobi and as a managing partner at Mohammed Muigai Advocates.
During his tenure, he specialized in commercial litigation, arbitration, and constitutional law.
He also worked with the United Nations as the Special Rapporteur on racism, discrimination, and xenophobia from 2008 to 2011 and served as a judge in the African Court of Justice.
Appointed by President Mwai Kibaki, he became Attorney General on August 27, 2011. Prof. Muigai has extensively researched and published on international law, constitutional law, and human rights.
