Prime Cabinet Secretary (CS) Musalia Mudavadi has reiterated Kenya’s commitment to the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) in Haiti, following a phone conversation with US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau.
In a statement on September 4, the Prime Cabinet Secretary also urged the United Nations Security Council to take decisive political steps, including passing key resolutions, to ensure consistent support for the MSS or any other initiative aimed at securing lasting peace and prosperity in Haiti.
“Kenya is committed to and stands ready to continue making its contribution to the stabilization of our brotherly state Haiti. We applaud the selfless efforts of our gallant Kenya Police contingent in the MSS in spite of the acute technical, logistical and financial constraints,” read part of the statement.
“Kenya calls on the United Nations Security Council to take the political steps in passing the requisite resolutions to ensure that the MSS or any other initiative gets predictable and adequate support to ensure that Haiti achieves the much-needed peace and prosperity. We owe it to Haitians; we owe it to humanity.”
The phone call comes after the US President Donald Trump’s administration stated that it is planning to pick another country to lead the Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission in Haiti.
US Deputy Chief of Mission Kimberly J. Penland said on August 20 that the U.S was planning to double the size of the foreign forces deployed in Haiti, with possibly another country, rather than Kenya, leading the new team.
Mudavadi Commends the US
Mudavadi further commended the United States for its continued support in rallying international backing for the MSS Mission and for its commitment to strengthening the technical capacity of the force.
The two leaders acknowledged the leadership of President William Ruto and Kenya’s frontline role in the mission, noting that the MSS has made significant progress in tackling Haiti’s security challenges.
This includes enhancing security operations, supporting the Haitian National Police, and prioritizing the safety and resumption of learning in schools.
They agreed that the success of the Haiti mission depends heavily on the international community’s willingness to provide predictable and adequate support.
Such assistance, they noted, is critical to restoring peace and security in Haiti and enabling the political processes needed to reverse instability and steer the country toward prosperity.
Mudavadi praised the dedication of Kenya’s police contingent serving in Haiti under the MSS, despite facing acute technical, logistical, and financial challenges.
