The national and Kisumu County governments are leaving nothing to chance as the Lakeside City prepares to host the 9th Africities summit
The five day event which kicks off on May 17 is a flagship event of United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG Africa).
Already upgrade of roads leading to the summit venue is nearing completion with most of them being upgraded to bitumen standards
To ease accessibility of the venue, the ministry of Infrastructure has upgraded, among others ,the Mamboleo-Miwani, Airport-Mamboleo and Kondele-Mamboleo roads.
A 6,000-seater ultra-modern convention centre to host the summit is nearing completion as well
Kisumu County Governor Professor Anyang Nyong’o has said the summit will come with a host of long-term economic benefits for the Lake Region Bloc.
Speaking in Nairobi on Wednesday during a launch of the pre-summit activities , Nyong’o said the summit will reflect on the role of intermediary cities in Africa in the implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda and of the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
Kenya is banking on the summit to showcase how its devolved system of government has impacted on socio-economic and political development.
The hospitality and transport sectors are expected to be among the biggest beneficiaries of the summit
Kisumu City will also use the summit to showcase her investment opportunities
The Africities Summit is held after every 3 years
This year’s summit is organized in partnership with the Government of Kenya, the Council of Governors (CoG), and the County of Kisumu.
