Forty-seven individuals are cleared to contest the country’s presidential seat as independent candidates in the forthcoming 2022 August General Elections.
According to Ann Nderitu – The Registrar of Political Parties, this year’s polls have registered an overall increase in the number of independent candidates. 7,111 candidates are contesting for different seats come August 9, 2022.
Nderitu attributes the upsurge to heightened political wakefulness among the candidates compared to the previous 2017 polls.
Most of these independent candidates are defectors from political parties who lost in the party nominations. Nonetheless, the parties in response are set to ensure these defectors do not affect their support bases.
On Sunday, Jubilee Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni stated that the defectors’ decision to run as independent candidates shows their defiance and unwillingness to be answerable to anyone.
Furthermore, out of the 7,111 candidates:
- 104 are seeking the governor’s seats
- 141 are cleared to run for senator
- 110 are contesting for women representative positions
- 944 are seeking Member of Parliament positions
- 5765 are running for the MCA Seats.
