A man who was remanded after stabbing his girlfriend to death has told a Nakuru court that he was in a state of temporary madness which lead him to commit the act.
The suspect identified as Edmond Ruto, is a third-year student at Egerton University.
Moreover, Edmond admitted to stabbing his girlfriend, Cynthia Cheplang’at, six times on February 19, 2018 at Njokerio estate in Nakuru County.
He further testified before a Nakuru High Court Judge Joel Ngugi, saying he is now a reformed man as a result of his four-year confinement at Nakuru GK Prisons.
Furthermore, Edmond provided the court with a certificate of good conduct for the training he received in prison.
“I am the cause of everything and it pains me because my actions brought unimaginable pain to both Chelang’at’s family and mine. I am sorry and I regret everything. “If I knew what I know now, may be Chelang’at would still be alive today.” Edmond said as quoted by the Standard
Nevertheless, the victim’s family lawyer Kipkoech Ng’etich dismissed the apology, adding that it is covered in pretense.
“Ruto’s family had time between 2018 and 2021 but they did not ask for forgiveness until 2022. Their action not in good faith,”Kipkoech told the Nakuru court.

Moreover, the lawyer maintained that Edmond Ruto still deserves a harsh sentence to serve as an example for those committing similar offenses.
“To send a message to men and women who use their spouses as punching bags, the court should give the accused a severe sentence, as an example to others,” said the lawyer.
Likewise, Edmond pleaded with the court to give him a non-custodial sentence of three years so he can use his skills to help other students in similar situations.
His sentence has been scheduled for September 29.
