A fire broke out in Nairobi’s South B area in the early hours of Monday, September 7, destroying shops along Kapiti Road as flames spread towards the nearby Golden Gate Estate.

The blaze started around midnight, according to local reports, and continued into the early morning. Videos circulating online showed large flames and thick smoke rising from buildings along the busy road.

Three separate fire incidents have been reported in different parts of Kenya between Sunday night and Monday morning, September 7, affecting shops in Nairobi, bushland in Taita-Taveta and a school dormitory in Murang’a County.

The incidents triggered emergency responses, with members of the public and response teams joining efforts to contain the fires. No deaths or injuries had been reported at the time of reporting.

The fire was reported around midnight, with videos circulating online showing flames and thick smoke rising from buildings along the road. Reports indicated that several shops were destroyed as the blaze spread through the affected structures.

The incident raised concern among residents in the neighbouring estate as the flames moved towards the residential area.

The full extent of the property damage and the cause of the fire had not immediately been established.

The incident adds to recent fire concerns in South B, an area that has experienced other fires affecting commercial and residential structures.

Bush Fire Spreads Along Voi-Taveta Road

In Taita-Taveta County, emergency teams responded to a large bush fire along the Voi-Taveta Road on Sunday evening.

The Kenya Red Cross said the fire broke out at about 9:50 p.m. on September 6, prompting the deployment of emergency teams. The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and Taita-Taveta County fire brigade also joined the operation to contain the flames and protect people living near the affected area.

Nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution as the fire spread through vegetation.

Initial reports had suggested that the incident involved a fuel tanker, but the Kenya Red Cross later clarified that ground teams had established that it was a bush fire rather than a tanker blaze.

“Kenya Red Cross, Kenya Wildlife Service and the County fire brigade remain on the ground working to contain a bush fire along the Voi-Taveta Road and keep nearby residents safe. Note: earlier reports described this as a tanker fire. Ground teams have since confirmed it is a bush fire,” read the notice.

Fire Reported at Nyagatugu Boys High School

In Murang’a County, a separate fire was reported at Nyagatugu Boys High School in Kangema, where a dormitory was affected.

Members of the public reportedly joined efforts to put out the fire after flames were noticed at the school. Initial reports indicated that the situation was brought under control without any reported casualties.

The cause of the fire had not been established, and details on the number of students affected and the extent of damage to the dormitory remained unavailable.

Nyagatugu Boys incident comes amid continued concerns over fires in Kenyan schools, particularly those involving boarding facilities where students sleep in dormitories.
