The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has appointed a new Chief of Staff. In a statement released on May 25, the AUC confirmed the appointment of Dr. Yann Bedzigui as its new Chief of Staff.
Yann Bedzigui is expected to support the Chairperson in advancing the Commission’s vision, priorities, and institutional objectives, drawing on his extensive experience in governance and international relations.
“The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has appointed Dr. Yann Bedzigui as his new Chief of Staff. Dr. Bedzigui brings to the position a wealth of experience and distinguished service,” read the AU Commission statement in part.
In the announcement, the Chairperson expressed appreciation to the outgoing Chief of Staff, Ambassador Souef Mohamed El-Amine, for his service and contribution to the Commission during his tenure.
The Chairperson also commended the outgoing official for his professionalism and leadership and extended best wishes in his future roles.

Profile of Yann Bedzigui, the New AU Chief of Staff
Yann Bedzigui is a Cameroonian‑born political scientist and senior African Union diplomat, currently serving as Chief of Staff to the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
He holds a PhD in Political Science (International Relations) from Université Panthéon‑Assas (Paris II), France, and is recognized as an associate researcher at the Center Thucydide, a French‑based research center focused on international relations and security.
Bedzigui has published articles and policy research on African security governance, the African Union, and regional peace and security architecture, often in African and European think tank outlets.

Notably, Yann Bedzigui has worked for years in the African Union system, including in the Peace and Security Department, where he contributed to analysis and policy work on conflicts and peace‑building across the continent.
Inside the Role of the New African Union Chief of Staff
As Chief of Staff, he will serve as the principal coordinator of the Chairperson’s office, managing internal operations and ensuring effective execution of leadership priorities.
His responsibilities include agenda management, preparation of policy advice, and coordination of high-level briefings for the Chairperson.
He will also act as a key liaison between the African Union Commission, member states, AU organs, and international partners.
