House Democrats have launched an investigation into FBI Director Kash Patel over allegations related to alcohol use while on duty.
In a letter signed by 18 Democratic lawmakers, concerns were raised about what they described as “alleged alcohol abuse” and its possible impact on professional conduct at the FBI.
The lawmakers requested Patel to respond formally to the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), a standard screening tool used to assess drinking patterns.
The letter also asked him to submit his results alongside a sworn statement confirming the accuracy of his responses under penalty of perjury.
According to the letter, lawmakers said the inquiry was driven by concerns about leadership standards in federal law enforcement. They wrote that the matter required urgent attention given the responsibilities of the FBI director’s office.
Lawmakers Demand Formal Alcohol Screening Response
The letter attached a 10-question AUDIT questionnaire, which includes questions on frequency of drinking, inability to meet responsibilities due to alcohol use, and memory loss linked to drinking.

One section of the letter stated: “Given the urgency and gravity of the risks to our nation and our people, we request that you complete and submit the attached Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test along with a sworn statement attesting that your answers are true under penalty of perjury.”
Another part of the questionnaire asks how often a person needs a first drink in the morning after heavy drinking and whether drinking has caused failure to complete expected duties.
Lawmakers said the questionnaire is widely used in medical and public health settings to identify harmful drinking behaviors. They argued that applying it to a senior federal official reflects the seriousness of their concerns.
Patel has not publicly responded to the letter or the allegations contained in it.
Political Pressure Builds Around FBI Leadership Conduct
The investigation adds new political pressure on Patel, who was appointed to lead the FBI under President Donald Trump’s administration. The dispute is expected to deepen tensions between Democrats in Congress and federal law enforcement leadership.

Democrats have framed the inquiry as a matter of accountability and public trust in federal institutions. Republicans, however, are likely to view the move as politically motivated, although no formal response from GOP leadership had been issued at the time of reporting.
As at the moment of this report, the FBI has also not released an official statement addressing the allegations or the congressional request.
