Former first lady Jill Biden thought her husband, Joe Biden, was having a stroke as she watched his shaky performance in the June 27, 2024, presidential debate against Donald Trump.
In a clip from an upcoming CBS News interview, Jill Biden described the moment as frightening.
“I don’t know what happened,” she said. “As I watched it, I thought, ‘Oh, my God, he’s having a stroke.’ And it scared me to death.”

Jill Biden Recalls Fear During Debate Night
A short clip released on Wednesday, May 27, captured her raw reaction to that night in Atlanta.
She described the moment as frightening, adding that it was the first time she was seeing Biden in that state.
“I was frightened, because I had never seen Joe like that before or since. Never,” she recalled.
The debate against Donald Trump signified a turning point in the 2024 campaign. Biden, then 81, appeared frail and confused for long stretches.
He mixed up facts, trailed off mid-sentence, and at times remained motionless as viewers across the country watched in real time.
It was reported that Democratic leaders panicked in group chats and on cable news. Within weeks, the pressure forced Biden to drop out of the race.
Jill Biden Publicly Defended Husband After Event
But Jill Biden’s private fear stood in sharp contrast to what she said publicly right after the debate ended.
She joined her husband at a watch party in Atlanta and put on a smile. “You did such a great job,” she told him. “You answered every question. You knew all the facts.” That immediate praise helped steady the campaign for a short time.
Biden’s camp said he simply had a bad night. They cited a cold and months of travel as reasons for the poor showing.

Now, nearly two years later, she is opening up about how scared she felt in those minutes.

Still, the debate performance raised serious concerns inside his own party. Senior Democrats, donors, and even some family members worried in private.
Polls showed voters had already grown uneasy about Biden’s age. The debate made those doubts impossible to ignore.
Jill Biden watched from the audience as her husband of nearly 50 years faltered. She did not use the word “horrified” when asked. “I wasn’t horrified,” she told Braver. “I was frightened.”
