The County Government of Mombasa has announced the closure of all public beaches in Mombasa for 48 hours effective immediately.
In a notice dated May 23, 2025, Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Nassir announced the closure of all public beaches from May 23rd to 25th is due to projected strong winds reaching up to 25 knots (12.9 m/s) and wave heights of up to 2.5 meters.
The severe weather conditions pose significant risks to public safety, marine activities, and coastal infrastructure, prompting the precautionary measure.
“All public beaches in Mombasa County shall remain closed for 2 days effective immediately. All beach-related activities are strictly prohibited during this period,” part of the statement read.
Emergency Response
Following the advisory issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department on May 22, 2025, warning of strong southerly winds and large waves expected along the Kenyan coast, the Governor of Mombasa convened an emergency meeting of the County Disaster Preparedness Committee.
The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from the National Government Administration Office, the State Department for Interior, the National Police Service, the Kenya Maritime Authority, the Kenya Coast Guard Service, the Kenya Red Cross, beach management units, and disaster response agencies.
“Together, they reviewed the forecast and assessed the risks to public safety, leading to the decision to close all public beaches and suspend coastal activities as precautionary measures,” part of the statement read.

Here are some other coastal activities that are suspended during severe weather conditions;
Suspension of Ocean-Based Activities
All marine and ocean-related commercial and recreational activities, including fishing and water sports, are suspended until further notice.
This precaution aims to protect residents and visitors from the imminent risks posed by high winds and rough sea conditions.
Temporary Halt on Construction Activities
Due to the increased risk of wind-related hazards, all ongoing construction work across Mombasa County is ordered to cease immediately.
Contractors are directed to secure their sites properly to prevent accidents or damage caused by strong winds.
Additionally, the County Government will provide daily updates on the situation to keep the public and stakeholders informed of any changes or new directives.
