Officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) have raided the homes of former Treasury Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ukur Yattani.
The detectives are reported to have conducted the raid on Wednesday, April 24, morning at both his Nairobi and Marsabit homes.
Yattani was taken into custody by detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) for questioning regarding his alleged involvement in the loss of billions.
He was supposed to present himself at the EACC Integrity Centre Police Station early in the morning.
Yattani served as Marsabit governor before being appointed as Treasury CS by Former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Yatani Troubled Days with Government After Leaving Office
In October 2023, President William Ruto led the cabinet in revoking the government’s purchase of 60 percent shares of Telkom Kenya from the United Kingdom (UK) based Helios Investment fund.
According to a cabinet dispatch sent from the sitting, the decision was aimed at addressing the challenges posed by nationalization of the telecom company. This came months after members of parliament launched a probe into the dealings that led to the purchase.
Yatani and other officials appeared before the Finance Committee in parliament in the inquiry process because of decisions made by the National Security Council that led to setbacks and ultimately the withdrawal of the multinational investor.
The company alleges that the government unlawfully obtained a prime plot belonging to Telkom, valued at approximately Ksh10 billion, without obtaining the necessary consent.
When Helios declared its intentions to exit Telkom, the government began a purchase process paying Ksh6 billion for the total amount owed to Telkom both in shares and shareholder loans.
In his submissions, Yatani explained that the purchase was expedited due to security reasons as advised by the National Security Council.

EACC Going After Yatani
In its third quarterly report of July to September 2023 period, EACC highlighted the Telkom acquisition saga calling on the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Renson Ingonga to pursue charges against individuals involved in the case.
A report recommending charges against these officials was submitted to Ingonga on August 29, 2023.
