The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced the temporary closure of the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway (A8) between Makupa Bridge and Changamwe interchange.
In a statement on September 23, KeNHA notified the public that the road construction works on a section of Mombasa – Nairobi (A8) Highway between the Makupa Bridge and Changamwe Interchange have been extended from Tuesday, September 23, 2025, to Saturday, October 4, 2025.
KeNHA wishes to notify the public of the extension on the temporary closure of Mombasa – Nairobi (A8) Highway between Makupa Bridge and Changamwe Interchange from Tuesday September 23, 2025, to Saturday October 4, 2025, to allow for road construction and drainage works to ensure seamless road connectivity along this section.
On August 19, KeNHA announced a temporary two-week closure of the same section of Mombasa-Nairobi Highway.
The closure started on Saturday, August 23, 2025, and lasted until Sunday, September 7, 2025.
KeNHA explained that the closure is necessary to carry out road construction and drainage works aimed at enhancing connectivity between Makupa Bridge and the Changamwe
KeNHA warned motorists of potential traffic disruptions during this period and advised them to use the designated service lanes as outlined in the traffic plan or follow instructions from traffic marshals.

Motorists travelling towards Nairobi were diverted before reaching Makupa Bridge and rejoin the highway after the closed section.
Those heading towards Mombasa were redirected via a diversion route near Seven Stars and Mitchell Cotts to avoid the construction zone.

Nairobi–Mombasa Expressway Project
The Public–Private Partnership (PPP) Committee recently rejected the proposal for the ambitious Nairobi–Mombasa Expressway, popularly branded as Usahihi stating that it did not meet the legal and technical requirements.
The 459-kilometre toll road was expected to link Mlolongo in Machakos to Bonje in Mombasa.

Initially pegged at an estimated cost of Ksh460 billion, the project was to be developed under a PPP model, with construction projected to begin in the first quarter of 2026.
However, in July 2025 the PPP Committee ruled that the proposal did not meet the threshold set out under the PPP Act.
It directed that the project be halted and directed KeNHA to restructure it.
