The National Police Service (NPS) has announced a countrywide crackdown on traffic offences as schools close for the end-of-year holidays, with increased enforcement on highways and roads effective immediately.
In a press release dated October 19, 2026, the NPS said it would work with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to intensify traffic law enforcement and public sensitisation across the country.
“The National Police Service (NPS) reminds motorists and all other road users of the paramount importance of observing traffic rules and regulations, particularly as schools close for the end- of-year holiday,” the statement read in part.
“Accordingly, the National Police Service, in collaboration with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), will intensify public sensitisation and enforcement of traffic regulations nationwide.”
NPS Intensify Road Checks as Students Travel Home
Police will target speeding, unroadworthy vehicles, overloading and failure to use safety belts. Police will also thoroughly inspect school transport vehicles to ensure compliance with safety standards.
More police officers will be deployed on roads to enforce traffic laws as increased student travel raises the risk of road accidents during the holiday period.
Motorists have been urged to observe speed limits, avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and refrain from using mobile phones while driving.
Parents and guardians have also been advised to entrust children only to reputable public service vehicles that meet road safety requirements.
Members of the public can report reckless driving and unroadworthy vehicles at the nearest police station or through the emergency numbers 999 and 911, the #FichuaKwaDCI hotline on 0800 722 203, or WhatsApp on 0709 570 000.
