President Ruto Leaves the Country

President William Ruto has flown out of the country to represent Kenya at the Second United Nations Food Systems Summit Stocktake.

According to a statement from Ruto’s office on Sunday, July 27, he has left for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The summit, which brings together world leaders, development partners, and private sector stakeholders, is aimed at advancing the global agenda on food systems transformation.

Ruto will deliver Kenya’s national statement at the summit, reaffirming the country’s commitment to overhauling food systems to support sustainable development and strengthen climate resilience.

“The President will deliver Kenya’s national statement, reaffirming the country’s commitment to transforming food systems to support sustainable development and enhance climate resilience,” the statement reads.

What Ruto Will Be Up to in Ethiopia

While in Ethiopia, Ruto will participate in a series of high-level thematic meetings with global leaders, development partners, and business leaders.

The discussions are expected to focus on policy actions and investment strategies aimed at ensuring food security and building resilient agricultural systems.

Additionally, on the sidelines of the summit, President Ruto is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with key leaders, including Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and African Union Commission Chairperson Mahamoud Ali Youssouf.

“President Ruto is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with several leaders, including H.E. Dr. Abiy Ahmed, Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia; H.E. Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister of the Italian Republic; and H.E. Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), among others.”

These bilateral engagements will focus on strengthening diplomatic relations, enhancing trade and infrastructure partnerships, and promoting regional cooperation.

“These discussions will focus on strengthening bilateral ties, deepening regional integration, and enhancing cooperation in food security, trade, infrastructure, climate action, and multilateral diplomacy,” added the statement.

Kenya’s Role at the Summit

Kenya’s participation at the UN Food Systems Summit Stocktake is part of the country’s broader efforts to position itself as a leader in sustainable agriculture and climate-smart food production in Africa. 

The summit will also offer an opportunity for the country to rally support for regional partnerships that address food insecurity and climate change across the continent.

The summit is hosted under the United Nations’ initiative to review progress made since the 2021 Food Systems Summit and identify key areas for acceleration as countries strive to meet the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
