President William Ruto has appointed Dr Mohammed Abdi Mohammed as the chairperson of Social Health Authority (SHA).
Ruto via a gazette notice dated September 17 said the appointment of Mohammed Abdi Mohammed as a member of the SHA vide Gazette Notice No. 604 of 2024 and Gazette Notice No. 15953 of 2023 have been revoked.
“In exercise of the powers were conferred by section 7 (1) (a) of the Social Health Insurance Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and the Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint- Mohammed Abdi Mohammed (Dr.) to be the Chairperson of the Social Health Authority, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 17th September, 2024,” read part of the notice.
Mohammed Abdi will succeed Timothy Olweny, who has held the position for ten months since his appointment in November 2023.
Meanwhile, Olweny has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Board of the National Cancer Institute, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 17th of September 2024.
Health Cabinet Secretary Dr Deborah Barasa announced the appointment in the specia gazette issued on Tuesday, noting that the appointment of Dr Githinji had been revoked.
“The appointment of Dr Gitahi Githinji is revoked,” read part of the gazette notice form Health CS Dr Deborah Barasa.

Mohammed Abdi Professional Career
Prior to his appointment as the chairperson, Dr. Mohammed has been serving as an independent board director for SHA since January 2024.
He is also a trustee at the Takaful Umbrella Fund, the first Shariah-compliant retirement and benefits scheme in East and Central Africa.
Additionally, Mohammed serves as an independent director at Villgro Kenya, which is an early-stage business incubator and impact investor that supports startups in the healthcare and life science sectors.
Between September 2016 and March 2024, he served as the National Chair of the Kenya Association of Private Hospitals.
During the same period, Mohammed held several positions at the Kenya Medical Association (KMA).

He served as the Chair of the Disciplinary and Ethics Committee from 2016 to March 2024, and the Convener of the Standing Committee on Managed Healthcare from 2014 to 2016.
He was also the Convener of the Standing Committee on ICT/CPD from 2016 to 2018, and the Chair of the Nairobi Division from 2012-2014.
Other Experiences
The new SHA chairperson is the former co-Founder, CEO & Managing Director of Ladnan Hospital.
He has previously worked at the Metropolitan Hospital Holdings Limited as the Director and Chief Operating Officer and a council member for Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDU).
Mohammed has also worked for the Ministry of Health as a Medical Officer at Malindi District hospital and a Medical Doctor for humanitarian agency, Medicins Sans Frontieres.
He holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery: MBChB, Medicine from the University of Nairobi (2003-2008).
