Biography
Dr. Deborah Barasa is the Health Cabinet Secretary (CS). She succeeded former Health CS Susan Nakhumicha, who was terminated on July 11, 2024.
Mulongo has worked in national and referral health institutions, private facilities, and Community-Based Organizations.
Additionally, her core competencies include Internal Medicine/Infectious disease, communicable and non-communicable disease prevention and control for clinical cases and public health programs.
Educational Background of Deborah Barasa
The new Health CS nominee graduated from the University of Nairobi (UoN) in 2006 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB).
Similarly, she holds a Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine from the same institution from September 2012 to December 2017.
Deborah is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Infectious Diseases at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
Professional Career of New Heath CS Nominee
Mulongo is a medical doctor specializing in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases.
Likewise, she has over 18 years of field experience as a senior medical officer with progression to an Internal Medicine Physician and technical advisor having worked in health institutions both national, referral, private and Community Based Organizations.
She has worked as an internal medicine physician at Mater Hospital and as a consultant physician at CHANF Community Health Services (CHANF-CNS) in Kitengela, Kajiado County.
Prior to her appointment by President Ruto to lead the health ministry, she was employed as an Internal Medicine physician and Infectious Disease Expert at the World Health Organization (WHO) Africa Hub in Nairobi for more than four years.
At the WHO, she has established sustainable programs in Eastern Southern Africa, supports member states in developing and implementing national action plans and offer technical guidance on global policies and guidelines.
Deborah Barasa has worked as an Internal Medicine Consultant Physician at CHANF Community Health Services in Kitengela, Kajiado County.
