The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested three suspects in connection with a violent attack at Chemelil Academy in Muhoroni Sub-County, where a group of more than 20 armed men stormed the institution, injured staff and stole valuables.
In a statement on June 19, the DCI said the incident occurred on June 18, when officers from Muhoroni Sub-County received a distress call reporting an ongoing attack at the school.
According to investigators, officers who responded to the scene found about 20 men armed with crude weapons fleeing in different directions, with some heading towards Achego while others escaped into nearby sugarcane fields.
“Law enforcement officers from Muhoroni Sub-County have arrested three individuals linked to a brazen act of violence, where a gang stormed Chemelil Academy, leaving a trail of chaos and destruction,” stated the DCI.

DCI Arrests 3 Suspects Among 20 Men Who Stormed Chemelil Academy
According to investigators, officers who arrived at the scene encountered about 20 men armed with crude weapons fleeing in different directions. Some of the suspects reportedly escaped towards Achego, while others disappeared into nearby sugarcane fields.
The DCI said the gang had already stormed the school’s administration block, where they vandalized the offices of the Principal and Deputy Principal.
“The attackers are also alleged to have assaulted members of staff and stolen 10 smartphones, cash, and other valuables during the raid,” noted the investigators.

Police confirmed that injured staff members were rushed to Nyang’oma Sub-County Hospital, where they are receiving treatment and are in stable condition.
Following the incident, detectives launched a manhunt that led to the arrest of three suspects identified as Bernard Ouma, Thomas Onyango Ouma, and Walter Owa, also known as Teddy Obul, at different locations within Chemelil.
The suspects are currently in custody undergoing processing ahead of their arraignment in court.
The DCI further said that operations are ongoing to trace and arrest additional suspects believed to have participated in the attack.
“These three are now in custody, undergoing processing pending arraignment. Meanwhile, officers are tirelessly pursuing additional leads to trail and apprehend the other suspects still on the run,” stated the DCI.
Calm has since been restored at the school as police continue a manhunt for the remaining suspects. The motive for the attack is still unknown.
Meanwhile, the institution, together with parents, has been engaged in a dispute with the new management of Chemelil Sugar Factory following the leasing process that transferred control of the mill to a private investor.
