Police have launched a manhunt for Kuresoi North Member of Parliament Alfred Mutai after naming him the prime suspect in violent clashes that left several people injured at a political event in Nakuru County.
In a statement on June 19, the National Police Service (NPS) said the MP is on the run and being sought in connection with the chaos that erupted at Sirikwa Umoja Grounds in Kuresoi Sub-County during a youth empowerment meeting attended by political leaders.
Manhunt Intensified as Police Issue Warning
The NPS said it has launched a coordinated operation to arrest the MP and others believed to have participated in the violence.
“The Service is pursuing the prime suspect, Hon. Alfred Mutai, who is currently on the run. Police officers have launched a manhunt to apprehend him and other persons connected to the incident,” the statement said.
The authority urged Mutai to present himself at the nearest police station to assist investigators in establishing the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The police stressed that no individual is above the law, regardless of political position or affiliation, and warned that firm action will be taken against anyone found engaging in violence, sponsoring criminal gangs, or disrupting lawful gatherings.
The statement further cautioned members of the public against taking part in political violence and called for restraint among supporters. The NPS said political competition must be conducted within the confines of the law and with respect for differing views
Confrontation Turns Violent at Political Event
According to the police, preliminary investigations indicate that the unrest began after a confrontation between groups linked to the MP and supporters of Governor Kihika.

The confrontation escalated into gunfire, with several individuals sustaining gunshot wounds and being rushed to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
Authorities did not immediately give the exact number of those injured but confirmed that the situation became volatile within a short period.
Police also revealed that property was destroyed during the disturbance. A bus, registration number KDO 155G, which had transported tents and chairs to the venue, was set ablaze by unknown individuals.

The incident occurred in the presence of several leaders, including Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi and Bahati MP Irene Njoki, raising concerns about safety at political gatherings.
Police said the clashes point to broader concerns over rising cases of political intolerance and disorderly conduct during public gatherings.
