The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested a man suspected of impersonating a police officer and stealing a loaded police firearm from an officer at Kitale Police Station.
The incident unfolded on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, after the suspect arrived at the station dressed in a police raincoat and introduced himself as a newly posted officer from Eldoret.
According to the DCI, the man struck up friendly conversations with officers on gate duty and requested assistance in finding accommodation within the police lines.
“With an air of familiarity, he chatted up the officers on gate duty, charmingly asking for help in finding accommodation in the police line. Little did they know this was no ordinary tale of a newly posted officer,” DCI said.
The suspect was identified as a 22-year-old Brian Kibet.
DCI Arrests Man Suspected of Impersonating a Police Officer
The DCI noted that the man later requested to be directed to a nearby hotel to grab a meal, with officers accompanying him.
However, during the walk, the suspect allegedly duped one of the officers into carrying his belongings before making away with the officer’s loaded Steyr rifle containing 25 rounds of 9mm ammunition.
Police said the officer handed over the firearm near shops, after which the suspect immediately boarded a motorcycle that was on standby and fled towards Kitale town.

Arrest of Brian Kibet
Acting on information from members of the public, officers from Sibanga Police Station conducted an operation in Sokomoko Village, Sitatunga Location, Trans Nzoia East Sub-county, where they arrested the 22-year-old Brian Kibet.
Detectives said that the stolen firearm and the 25 rounds of ammunition were recovered during the operation.
The suspect is currently in custody awaiting arraignment.
The DCI commended members of the public for providing information that led to the recovery of the weapon and the arrest of the suspect, noting that cooperation between the public and security agencies remains crucial in the fight against crime.

Another Man Arrested for Impersonating Police Officer
Earlier, detectives in Kirinyaga East Sub-County arrested a man suspected of impersonating a police officer and recovered several government stores during a raid at his residence in Thika.
According to DCI, the suspect, identified as Newton Wachira Waweru, was apprehended following intelligence reports linking him to police impersonation activities.
After his arrest, detectives interrogated the suspect before trailing him to his residence in Makongeni area, Thika, where a search was conducted.
During the operation, officers recovered an assortment of government stores, including two police smoke jackets, two jungle green trousers, a green prison lanyard, desert military boots, and a replica firearm, among other items.
