Content creator Murugi Munyi has explained why she would keep the surname “Munyi” even if her marriage to her husband, Zach Munyi, ended.
Speaking on her platform, Murugi explained that ‘Murugi Munyi’ is now her established personal brand and appears on all her official documents.
Official documents in Zach Munyi’s name include her national identification (ID) documents, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) records, and legal papers, according to Murugi.
“ Sometimes when I look at my page and I see like my handle Murugi Munyi and I’m just like if anything was ever to happen and like Zach and I split up God forbid and I believe it will never happen but God forbid if something was to happen would I go back to being Murugi Obuaka given that all my government documents, my KRA, my ID, my everything on my documents and everything is Munyi. Like, what would happen? I think I would need to remain Munyi,” Murugi Munyi clarified.
Additionally, she added that it would be difficult to change her name back to her maiden name or, if remarried, to change to her new husband’s surname.
According to Murugi, her future husband will, in the event of a divorce, have to accept her decision to maintain her brand name, Munyi.
