President William Ruto has directed that August 27th be observed as a “Katiba Day” from 2025 going forward.
In a statement on August 25, Ruto said Katiba Day shall be observed throughout the territory of Kenya and all its diplomatic missions abroad to remember the promulgation of the Constitution.
He stated that the day will be dedicated to renewing Kenya’s shared commitment to the ideals of its Constitution by fostering national dialogue on constitutionalism, governance, and the rule of law.
I William Samoei Ruto, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution, do hereby proclaim that: August 27, 2025, and every 27th Day in the Month of August forever thereafter shall be observed as “Katiba Day” in commemoration of the promulgation of the Constitution of Kenya 2010.
Katiba Day Still a Working Day
However, the President said the day will remain a working day but directed the three arms of government, county governments and government institutions to observe the day by taking part in civic activities.
While Katiba Day shall remain a working day, all government institutions in the three arms of government and the two levels of governance, including schools, shall organize, hold, and participate in solemn civic activities on that Day to foster constitutional awareness and civic engagement.

He explained that the Constitution of Kenya was promulgated on August 27, 2010, in exercise of the sovereign will of the People of Kenya and in revitalising the foundational principles and values of democracy.
Ruto said the promulgation of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 marked a defining moment in the country’s history, heralding a new era of constitutionalism, citizen-centred governance, devolution, and equitable development, as well as the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms, and a shared aspiration for a more just, equitable, and prosperous nation for all.

Ruto on Constitution’s 15th Anniversary
He stated that 27 August 2025 marks the fifteenth anniversary of the promulgation of the 2010 Supreme Law.
The President said the anniversary presents a unique opportunity to celebrate our Constitution, which is universally acclaimed as one of the most transformative and progressive in human history.
It is befitting for the people of Kenya to commemorate this day as a reminder of our collective duty to obey, preserve, protect and implement the Constitution. I hereunto have set my Hand and caused the Public Seal of the Republic to be affixed unto this Presidential Proclamation.
