The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has started extending the contracts for all intern teachers whose contract expires in September.
TSC has started to invite the 20,000 intern teachers who were engaged by the Commission in September 2023, to renew their internship contract and extend it by 4 months.
This means that the intern teachers will serve for more than one year contrary to what the initial internship agreement reads in case of contract renewal.
The internship contracts for the intern teachers were expected to expire on 31st August 2024 upon the lapse of the one-year contract period that was set from last year.
However, TSC has since invited willing intern teachers to renew their contracts, asking them to fill out forms ahead of expiry of current job agreements.
TSC has on its payroll a total of 46,000 teachers serving on internship terms.

The new contracts are set to kick off effective from 1st September 2024 to 31st December 2024.

TSC’s invitation for the teachers to renew their internship contract comes days after the Commission deferred their confirmation.
Though President William Ruto appended his signature to the Supplementary Appropriation (No. 2) Bill 2024 paving way for their confirmation, TSC claimed that the amount allocated was not enough to confirm the teachers this year.
The Commission said the amount is short of the Ksh30 billion it needs to pay the intern teachers under the new terms for a whole year until, July 2025, the next budget allocation.
TSC has revealed that it is also planning to recruit 20,000 intern teachers in October this year. Of these, 18,000 will be for junior secondary schools and 2,000 for primary schools.
