Britam, originally known as British American Insurance Company (Kenya) Limited, traces its roots back to 1965 as a branch of the larger British American Insurance Company.

It became locally incorporated in 1979 and has since grown into a diversified financial services group with a strong presence in Kenya and across other parts of Africa.

By 1984, local Kenyan investors had acquired a 33.33% shareholding in the company, in line with government directives to increase local ownership.

In 2004, the company underwent a major restructuring, forming a non-operating holding company and incorporating British-American Asset Managers to focus on investment advisory and fund management.

Britam began its regional expansion in 2010 with the establishment of Britam Insurance Company (Uganda) Limited. A year later, in 2011, the company listed its shares on the Nairobi Securities Exchange through an initial public offering, opening up to public investment.

In 2015, the company rebranded to Britam Holdings Limited, reflecting its evolution into a diversified financial services group. Most recently, in 2024, Britam reported a 52% rise in pre-tax profit, highlighting its sustained growth and ongoing regional expansion.
