Mobile technology has transformed financial access in Kenya, making SACCO (Savings and Credit Cooperative) services more convenient for members.

SACCOs now leverage mobile platforms, including USSD codes and mobile banking apps, to allow members to perform transactions without visiting physical branches.

Mobile platforms reduce the need for physical visits, save time, and ensure that financial services are available around the clock. SACCOs also provide guidance on transaction security, urging members to keep PINs confidential and to confirm transactions via SMS alerts.

Mobile Banking Apps and Integration with M-Pesa

In addition to USSD, some SACCOs offer mobile applications compatible with smartphones.

Imarika SACCO, for example, offers a mobile app that enables members to transfer funds, apply for loans, and access their account statements.

The apps often feature two-factor authentication for security, ensuring that transactions remain safe.

Additionally, many SACCOs have integrated with M-Pesa, Kenya’s leading mobile money service.

This integration allows members to deposit funds into their SACCO accounts or pay SACCO loans directly from their M-Pesa wallets.

County SACCO Society Ltd, for instance, uses Paybill number 798620 to facilitate such transactions. Similarly, Univision SACCO provides members with a Paybill for seamless mobile deposits.

USSD Codes for Instant SACCO Transactions

Members can access SACCO accounts using shortcodes (USSD), which are compatible with any basic mobile phone.

This method allows instant access even in areas with limited internet connectivity.

According to the Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA), by 2023, some 228 regulated SACCOs offered mobile money connectivity through USSD codes.

The USSD services typically allow members to do things such as:

  • Check account balances (savings, loans, share capital)
  • Transfer funds between their SACCO account and mobile money wallet (e.g., via M‑Pesa)
  • Make deposits or repayments (loan or savings)
  • Apply for or request loans, subject to SACCO regulations
  • View mini-statements or account details
