A group of about 100 men, identified by police as supporters of former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga, caused panic along Jogoo Road in Nairobi on Wednesday, July 9, morning.
The group marched from Makadara Law Courts to the Central Business District (CBD).
Earlier, they had gathered at the Makadara Law Courts to attend a mention of Maina Njenga’s ongoing criminal case.
However, after the court session, they walked together on the streets, drawing attention and triggering concern among members of the public.
Videos shared online showed the group walking along Jogoo Road to spark a moment of tension in the wake of the anti-government protests.
“Are people holding demonstrations every day these days?” X user Teya Kevin questioned.

Kenyans React as Maina Njenga’s Supporters March
Photos and videos of the group quickly made rounds on social media, with some users assuming it was part of a new wave of demonstrations.
This caused confusion and anxiety among residents and commuters in the area.
“A large, unidentified crowd is currently marching along Jogoo Road and has now reached the area near St. Stephen’s Church/Church Army, moving toward City Stadium.
“The group appears to be singing and moving in an organised procession,” X user, Online mover stated
On the other hand, other users online warned motorists plying the road to use alternative routes because of traffic disruption.
“If you were unaware, this may affect movement and traffic in the area. Stay alert and avoid the route if you don’t need to be there. No violence has been reported so far,” X user, Online mover added.
However, a police officer told witnesses that the group was peaceful and under surveillance throughout their movement.
No arrests were made, and the group eventually dispersed in the city centre without incident.
“There was nothing to worry about on the march,” a police officer said.

Ruto Rants About Demonstrations
Meanwhile, President William Ruto has instructed the police to act strictly against individuals who break the law during protests.
“Anyone who attempts to destroy or burn businesses should be shot in the leg to stop them,” said the president.
He also asked security forces to avoid using force on peaceful demonstrators or those not engaging in any criminal activity.
According to Ruto, some leaders are sponsoring violence across the country and causing destruction of property.
“To those leaders sponsoring violence, we are coming for you. Anyone who attacks a police officer will face the full force of the law. This is a declaration of war against lawlessness. I will not hesitate to protect the lives and property of our citizens,” he said.
