Questions Raised After Man Kills Self in Kanjos Cell

Residents of Machakos County have raised questions surrounding the mysterious death of a man who allegedly died by suicide while under the custody of Machakos County enforcement officers (Kanjos).

Responding to the shocking incident, residents sought to understand the circumstances under which the individual was taken to the cell and later hanged himself.

The incident took place at the Machakos Bus Park inside a makeshift cell on Monday, June 3, after the man was arrested by kanjos at the Machakos bus terminus.

The deceased who worked as a conductor is alleged to have committed suicide using a belt.

He was found hanging with his pants partially down in what is suspected to have been a protest against his detention by the Kanjos.

Machakos County Police Commander Patrick Lobolia confirmed the incident, stating that the man is said to have ended his life in a holding room located at Machakos Bus Park.

“The officers from the Machakos County government arrested the deceased and placed him in the holding room where he reportedly committed suicide. We don’t know why the man was arrested,” Lobolia told The Star.

Machakos Residents Question How the Man was Taken in the Cell

Consequently, the residents demanded answers on why the officers on duty fled upon discovering the incident.

Eyewitnesses at the scene said that the deceased had been repeatedly harassed by Kanjo officers for consecutively three times.

“After his detention, we are puzzled as to why our Kanjo officers can apprehend someone and place them in a cell without conducting an inspection to check what they are carrying,” one of the witnesses told Citizen TV.

“Today, a young man hanged himself with his belt. It is a rule that a person entering a cell should not bring with them items they can use to take their own life.”

Machakos County Chief of Staff Muya Ndambuki also confirmed the incident and appealed for calm as police probe investigations.

He further said that what the police will be doing is to establish if the set procedures and protocols were followed in the arrest.

“We as the County Officers we have interdicted the police officer involved in these pending investigations. We cannot condone any recklessness on our people,” he added.
