Bura Girls High School is a Catholic-sponsored national girls’ school located in Taita Taveta County. The institution’s history dates back to the 1920s, when it began as a day primary school for both boys and girls.
In the 1940s, the school transitioned into a girls’ intermediate boarding primary school and also housed a teacher training college known as St. Joseph during the same period.
Bura Girls became a fully-fledged girls’ high school in 1965, starting with one stream under the leadership of Sr. Philothea, a German Precious Blood Sister. A second stream, introduced through the Harambee movement, was added in 1974.
In 1990, the school leadership was officially handed over to Africans, with Rev. Sr. Dorothy Mshai, a St. Joseph Sister, becoming the first African head teacher.

On December 31, 1993, Sr. Mshai handed over the school to Mrs. Lucy Mwawasi, marking the first time the school was headed by a layperson.
She later handed over leadership to Mrs. Lilian Mwalekwa on April 14, 1999. On January 11, 2011, Mrs. Mwalekwa handed over to Mrs. Marietta Mwambanda, who briefly served before transferring leadership to the current principal, Mrs. Polly Asikoye, in December 2011.
Bura Girls began expanding its academic capacity in 2005, when it introduced a third stream, becoming fully three-streamed by 2008. In March 2010, Bura Girls was officially registered as a four-streamed school, with a student population of 682 at the time.
The population has since grown to approximately 700 students. The school was formally elevated to national school status, reflecting its academic excellence and role in promoting girls’ education in Kenya.
Bura Girls has consistently upheld a strong academic record in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations. Each year, the school admits over 200 students based on academic merit and individual choice, in line with Kenya’s education policy.
Performance
Until 2023, admissions were based on performance in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination.

This was, however, replaced by the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), introduced under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) framework.

The government previously issued a directive outlining the maximum annual school fees that parents should pay.
Under new guidelines introduced in 2020 by the Ministry of Education, Kenya’s 103 national schools were grouped into four clusters.
Bura Girls High School was placed in Cluster One (I), meaning the official annual fee cap for students is approximately Ksh75,798.
However, actual fees may vary slightly from school to school due to additional charges levied by individual institutions, such as for uniforms, motivation programs, or co-curricular activities.
