Govt Makes Major Changes in Moi University Leadership

The Ministry of Education has made changes to the council of Moi University.

In a gazette notice dated Friday, January 17, 2025, the Education Cabinet Secretary, Julius Ogamba appointed Professor (Prof.) Noah Midamba as the new Chairperson of the Moi University Council.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 36 (1) of the Universities Act, as read together with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Education appoints Noah Midamba (Prof.) to be Chairperson of the Council of Moi University for a period of three (3) years,” read a section of the notice. 

Prof. Midamba will take up this role immediately and serve for the next three years. Before this appointment, he served as the Vice-Chancellor of KCA University for over 10 years before his departure in 2021.

Government appoints new members to the Moi University Council

Additionally, the Education CS appointed new members to the Moi University Council, revoking the appointments of previous members.

“The appointments of Dr. Humphrey Kimani Njuguna, Prof. Clara Samiji Momanyi, Christopher Khaemba, Eusilah Jepkosgei Ngeny, and Susan Amlango Aletia have since been revoked,” Ogamba stated.

Dr. Mercy Nyambura Kanyara, Prof. Ronald Wasike, Anne Weceke Makori, and Dr. Edward Sambili were appointed to the Moi University Council following the revocations.

These changes in the University Council come at a time when the university has been grappling with a management crisis, largely attributed to financial challenges facing Moi University.

President Ruto Vows to resolve Moi University’s ongoing challenges

The leadership changes also follow President William Ruto’s recent promise to address the challenges at Moi University, including leadership concerns, during his visit to Uasin Gishu County.

While presiding over the official opening of Ngeria TTI in Kapseret, Uasin Gishu County, on Friday, January 10, 2025, the Head of State assured that once all the challenges facing the university are identified, his administration would take immediate steps to revive the institution.

“Once all the problems affecting the institution are identified, my administration will begin taking steps to help the university regain its former glory, including changing the university’s leadership and ensuring it has sufficient funding to stay afloat,” Ruto stated.

At the same time, he called for patience as his administration works on solutions to restore the institution’s status.
