The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) is responsible for financing higher education for thousands of Kenyan students each year.

Once you receive a loan, it is crucial to keep track of your balance, repayment history, and compliance status.

HELB Loan Statement

One of the most important documents for this purpose is your HELB loan statement, which is often required when seeking employment, government clearance, or planning your repayment schedule.

There are several ways to access and download your HELB loan statement, including the official online portal, the HELB mobile app, and the USSD service.

This article gives you a detailed guide on how to download your statement through each method.

Step-by-step Guide of Downloading HELB Loan

  1. Downloading via the HELB/HEF Online Portal (Recommended)

The official HELB/HEF online portal is the most reliable and comprehensive way to access your loan statement.

It provides a downloadable PDF document that you can print or send via email.

Step-by-step guide:

  1. Open a web browser and visit the official Higher Education Financing portal at portal.hef.co.ke.
  2. Sign in using your National ID number and the password you set up during registration.
    • If you do not have an account, click “Register” and provide the required details, which include your National ID, a valid email address, and your phone number.
  3. Once logged in, navigate to the “Self-Serve” section or “My Loans” menu.
  4. Click on “Loan Statement” to view all your loan details.
  5. Choose the specific loan you want to view if you have multiple loan accounts.
  6. Click “Download” or “Print” to generate a PDF version of your loan statement.
  7. Save the document to your computer or phone for future reference.

This method is ideal for those who need an official statement to present to employers, government agencies, or for record-keeping purposes.

  1. Accessing Your Statement via the HELB Mobile App

HELB also provides a mobile application for both Android and iOS users. The app allows you to check your balance, view a mini statement, and in some cases, download a statement directly to your device.

To use the app:

  1. Download the official HELB mobile app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
  2. Sign in using the same credentials you use on the portal.
  3. Go to the “Loan Statement” or “Mini-Statement” option.
  4. If the app supports full statement downloads, select “Download PDF.”
  5. Save the document to your phone or share it directly via email or messaging apps.

This option is convenient for quick access when you are away from a computer, though it may not always provide the full downloadable PDF needed for official purposes.

  1. Checking Balance via USSD Service

If you only need to check your balance or a brief repayment summary, HELB offers a USSD service. This method does not provide a downloadable statement but is quick and accessible from any mobile phone.

Steps:

  1. Dial *642# on your mobile phone.
  2. Register by setting a PIN if it’s your first time using the service.
  3. Navigate through the menu and select “Loan Balance” or “Mini-Statement.”
  4. Your current balance and recent transactions will be displayed on your screen.

This method is useful for borrowers who want instant updates on their account without logging into the portal.

Troubleshooting

  • Forgot Password: Use the “Forgot Password” option on the portal to reset your credentials. A reset link will be sent to your email or phone.
  • Payment Not Reflecting: Loan payments made via M-Pesa or other methods can take 24 to 48 hours to appear on your statement. If they do not, contact HELB customer care.
  • Account Issues: For technical problems, incorrect account details, or portal errors, call HELB at 0711 052 000 or email [email protected]. You can also visit any Huduma Centre for in-person assistance.
  • Clearance Certificate: Once your loan is fully repaid, you can apply for a clearance certificate through the same portal.

Preparation

Before attempting to download your statement, ensure you have:

  • Your National ID number or KCSE index number, if you are still a student.
  • A valid email address linked to your HELB account.
  • The mobile number registered with HELB is for verification purposes.
