The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has issued new guidelines to school heads and candidates as the third term begins, outlining changes for the 2025 Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA).
In a statement on Tuesday, August 26, KNEC announced that the 2025 KPSEA and KJSEA candidates will be required to shade their responses in circles on Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheets.
This marks a shift from previous years, when candidates were expected to draw lines.
KNEC Directs Schools, Candidates on New Exam Rules for 2025 KPSEA and KJSEA
KNEC said it had posted KJSEA sample papers on the Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) portal in January 2025 for schools to download and familiarize learners with the formats.
According to KNEC, schools can access the KJSEA sample papers, OMR sheets, and detailed instructions for both assessments directly from the CBA portal by following the provided steps.
“As schools open for the third term, we would like to remind heads of institutions and KPSEA and KJSEA candidates as follows,” KNEC announced.
“For the 2025 KPSEA and KJSEA, candidates will be expected to shade their responses in CIRCLES on the OMR sheets, unlike in the past when they were required to draw lines.”
Schools can access the KJSEA sample papers, sample OMR sheets, and instructions for KPSEA and KJSEA from the CBA portal by following these simple steps.

Steps to Access Sample Papers, Cover Pages and OMR Sheets
- Access the CBA Portal
Go to the CBA portal using this link: https://cba.knec.ac.ke - Log in
Enter your Assessment Centre credentials (Username and Password). - To access KJSEA Sample Papers:
i. Open the Grade 9 Portal
ii. Click on “Instructions & Sample Papers” to view all the sample papers
iii. Click the Download button next to the selected sample paper (Learning Area) - To access KJSEA Sample Cover Pages and KPSEA OMR Sheets:
i. Open either the Grade 9 or Grade 6 (KPSEA) Portal
ii. Click on “Download Sample Cover Page and OMR”
iii. The following sample cover pages will be displayed:
- 601 – English Language (Sample Cover Page)
- 602 – Kiswahili Lugha (Sample Cover Page)
- 606 – KSL (Sample Cover Page)
- OMR Sample Sheet
iv. Click the Download button next to the selected cover page or OMR sample
