Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) is a public university located in Kakamega, Western Kenya.

On September 30, 2007, the institution achieved full university status through an Act of Parliament and was renamed Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST).

However, the origins of MMUST date back to January 5, 1972, when it was established as the Western College of Arts and Applied Sciences (WECO).

It has branches with its Main Campus in Kakamega Town, in Western Kenya. Other branches include Webuye Campus, situated in Webuye, in Bungoma County. This campus serves students from the surrounding areas. 

Bungoma Campus, located in Bungoma County, and Nairobi Campus, located at Agriculture House, 3rd Floor, Nairobi. MMUST offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and diploma and Certificate programs through several schools and faculties.

School of Education

1. Bachelor of Education (Science)

  • A mean grade of C+ (Plus) in KCSE.

  • A C+ in the two chosen teaching subjects.

  • At least a C (Plain) in Mathematics and English at KCSE.

  • or Diploma in Education from a recognized institution with a mean grade of C- (Minus) may also be accepted.

Program Duration:

  • 4 academic years

Fees:

  • Ksh 122,400 per semester

2. Bachelor of Education (Arts)

Subject Combinations:

  • History/Geography

  • History/Kiswahili

  • English/Literature

  • History/Religion

  • Kiswahili/Religion

  • Geography/Religion

  • Business Studies/Geography

  • Business Studies/Mathematics

  • Music (combined with Arts or Science)

  • Home Science (combined with Arts)

Admission Requirements:

  • A mean grade of C+ (Plus) in KCSE.

  • At least a C+ in each of the two chosen teaching subjects.

  • At least D+ in Mathematics and C (Plain) in English.

Duration: 4 academic years

Fees: Ksh 91,800 per semester

3. Bachelor of Education (French)

Subject Combinations:

  • French combined with Kiswahili/Geography/History/Religion

Requirements:

  • A mean grade of C+ (Plus) at KCSE.

  • At least a C+ in French and one teaching subject.

  • At least D+ in Mathematics and C (Plain) in English.

Duration: 4 academic years

Fees: Ksh 91,800 per semester

4. Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Education

Requirements:

  • A mean grade of C+ (Plus) at KCSE.

  • A C+ in French and one teaching subject.

  • At least D+ in Mathematics and C (Plain) in English.

Duration: 4 academic years

Fees: Ksh 91,800 per semester

5. Bachelor of Education (Special Needs Education)

Requirements:

  • A mean grade of C+ at KCSE.

  • Alternatively, a Diploma in EDCE or KCE with at least Division III plus a P1 Certificate or Diploma in Teaching.

Duration: 4 academic years

Fees: Ksh 91,800 per semester

6. Bachelor of Education in Physical Education

Admission Requirements:

  • A mean grade of C+ (Plus) at KCSE.

  • At least a C+ in one teaching subject.

  • At least D+ in Mathematics and C (Plain) in English.

  • A Diploma in Adult and Non-Formal Education may also be considered.

Duration: 4 academic years

Fees: Ksh 91,800 per semester

7. Certificate in Early Childhood Education

Requirements:

  • A mean grade of D+ (Plus) at KCSE.

Program Duration: 2 academic years (4 semesters)

Fees: Ksh 20,000 per semester

School of Arts and Social Sciences (MMUST)

The following are courses offered under school of Arts and Social Sciences Bachelor of Criminology, Bachelor of Social Work & Community Development, Bachelor of Science in Journalism & Mass Communication, and Bachelor of Social Work & Community Development

  • Diploma courses offered in the school include
  • Diploma in Public Relations and Creative Advertising
  • Diploma in Music, Diploma in Social Work and Community Development.

At the same time, Certificate in Radio Production, Certificate in Music and Dance, Certificate in Social Work and community Development, and Certificate in Criminology and Criminal Justice.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum requirements for each of the degree courses include Mean grade of C+ (plus) at KCSE and at least a C+ (plus) in English, or 2 principal passes at A-level and 1 subsidiary in
relevant subjects. or Diploma in a relevant area of study. 

For Diploma courses, minimum requirements include Mean grade of C- (Minus) at KCSE or a Certificate in the relevant field from a recognized institution.

However, for certificate courses a student will require Minimum entry requirements for the certificate courses shall be D (Plain) in KCSE.

Fees and Duration

For Degree courses the fee range of Ksh 76,5000 per semester for a duration of 4 years, while for Diploma courses the fee range is Ksh 30,000 per semester. For certificate courses, the fee range is Ksh 20,000 per semester with a duration of 2 semesters per academic year.

School of Computing and Informatics

The following are different degree courses students can enroll in,

They include; Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Bachelor of Sciences in Information Technology, Bachelor of Technology Education (Computer Studies), Bachelor of Science in Computers Security and Forensics and Bachelor of Science in Information Systems and Knowledge Management

Admission Requirements: To be eligible for the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science program, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • A mean grade of C+ (Plus) at KCSE.

  • A minimum of C+ in Mathematics/Physics at KCSE.

  • At least C in English or Kiswahili.

Alternatively, candidates with an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution may also be considered for admission.

Program Duration: 4 academic years

Tuition Fees: The fee for this program is Ksh 91,800 per semester.

Diploma Courses include; Diploma in Information Technology, and Diploma in Business Information Technology

Admission Requirements

 To be eligible for the Diploma in Business Information Technology program, students must meet the following criteria:

  • A mean grade of C- (Minus) in KCSE.

  • A minimum of D+ in Mathematics or Business Studies or Commerce.

  • or with a relevant Certificate in Business or Information Technology from MMUST or any other recognized institution may be considered.

Duration: 2 academic years (offered in trimester mode).

Fees: Ksh 35,000 per semester.

Admission Requirements

 To be eligible for the Certificate in Information Technology program, students must meet the following criteria:

  • A mean grade of D+ (Plus) in KCSE.

  • Alternatively, applicants with a relevant qualification from a recognized institution may also be considered.

Duration: 1 academic year (offered in two semesters).

Fees: Ksh 20,000 per semester.

School of Natural Sciences

The following are degree courses offered; Bachelor of Science in Physics, Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Bachelor of Science in Industrial Chemistry, Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with Information Technology, Bachelor of Science in Applied Statistics with Information Technology and Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology.

At the same time, Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences, Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry, Bachelor of Science in Biology, Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources Management and Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science

Requirements:

To be eligible for the above courses students must meet the following criteria:

  • A mean grade of C+ (Plus) in KCSE.

  • A minimum of C+ in Physics and Mathematics.

  • At least C in English or Kiswahili.

Alternatively, students with an equivalent qualification (e.g., a relevant diploma from a recognized institution) may also be considered for admission.

Program Duration: The program takes 4 academic years to complete.

Tuition Fees: The tuition fees for the program are Ksh 119,000 and Ksh 122,000 per semester

School of Business and Economics

The following are courses offered under school of Business and Economics.

Bachelor of Commerce (BCom)

Specializations: The Bachelor of Commerce program at MMUST offers the following specializations.

  • Accounting

  • Marketing

  • Finance

  • Human Resource Management

  • Enterprise Development & Management

  • Purchasing & Supply Chain Management

  • Insurance & Risk Management

  • Operations and Information Systems Management

  • Business Administration

 Requirements: To be eligible for the Bachelor of Commerce program, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

  • A mean grade of C+ (Plus) in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

  • A minimum of C (Plain) in either Mathematics or Business Studies, and English or Kiswahili at KCSE.

  • Alternatively, students with a KACE certificate must have a minimum of two Principal passes.

Program Duration: The program is designed to be completed in 4 academic years, providing a comprehensive foundation in business principles and preparing graduates for the dynamic business environment.

Tuition Fees: The tuition fee for the Bachelor of Commerce program is Ksh 91,800 per semester, payable for the duration of the 4-year program.

Bachelor of Science in Economics

Requirements: To be eligible for admission into the Bachelor of Science in Economics program at MMUST, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • A minimum mean grade of C+ (Plus) in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

  • A minimum of C+ in Mathematics at KCSE.

Program Duration: The program is for 4 academic years.

Tuition Fees: The tuition fee for the Bachelor of Science in Economics is Ksh 91,800 per semester.

Diploma in Business Management

Specializations: The Diploma in Business Management at MMUST offers the following specializations. 

  • Accounting

  • Marketing

  • Finance

  • Human Resource Management

  • Enterprise Development & Management

  • Purchasing & Supply Chain Management

Requirements: To qualify for admission into the Diploma in Business Management program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • A mean grade of C- (Minus) in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

  • A minimum of D+ (Plus) in either Mathematics, Business Studies, or Commerce at KCSE.

  • Alternatively, students with a Certificate in Business Management from MMUST or any other recognized institution may also be eligible.

Program Duration: The program shall be completed in 2 academic years.

Tuition Fees: The tuition fee for the Diploma in Business Management is Ksh 20,000 per semester.

School of Engineering and the Built Environment 

Bachelor of Science in Mechanical and
Industrial Engineering
• Bachelor of Science in Civil and Structural
Engineering
• Bachelor of Science in Electrical and
Communication Engineering

Requirements: Mean grade of C+ and at least a C+ in Mathematics, Physics or Physical Sciences and Chemistry at KCSE or two principal passes in relevant science subjects and a subsidiary pass at A-level, one of the principals must be in Mathematics or Physics or Diploma in Engineering or its equivalent.

Duration and Fees: Ksh 168,300 per semester for 5 Academic years

Diploma Courses offered under School of Engineering,

• Diploma in Mechanical Engineering
• Diploma in Civil Engineering
• Diploma in Electrical and Electronics Engineering
• Diploma in Building Construction
• Diploma in Water Technology

Requirements: Mean Grade C- (Minus) at KCSE with D+ (Plus) in each of the following: Mathematics, Physics or Physical Sciences or a KNEC Craft Certificate from a recognized institution.

Duration and Fees: Ksh 40,000 per semester for 3 Academic years (2 Semesters per year)

School of Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedical Science

The following are degree courses offered at MMUST

Bachelor of Science in Global Community Health & Travel Medicine, Bachelor of Science (Paramedic Science), Bachelor of Science (Occupational Health).

Requirements: Mean Grade of C+ (plus) at KCSE with C+ (plus) in English/Kiswahili, Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics/Physics or B in Biological Sciences and C+ in English, Mathematics/Physical.

Fees: Ksh 137,700 per semester for 4 Academic years.

Diploma courses include; Diploma in Emergency Medical Technology, and Diploma in Community Oral Health and Therapy.

Requirements: Mean Grade of C+ (plus) at KCSE with C+ (plus) in English/Kiswahili, Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics/Physics or B in Biological Sciences and C+ in English Mathematics/Physical Sciences.

Fees and Duration: Ksh 30,000/= per semester for 3 Academic years.
