Strathmore School is a prestigious private secondary school located in Nairobi, which holds the distinction of being Kenya’s first multi-racial school.
It was established in 1961 as Strathmore College of Arts and Sciences, a residential Sixth Form College offering British-style A-level courses
Initially, students sat the Cambridge School Certificate Examination, later switching to the London GCE in 1963.
In 1977, Strathmore School transitioned into a full secondary school with the admission of its first O-level Form One class.
Between 1977 and 1980, the school gradually expanded to offer Forms One through Four.
Strathmore School history
The primary section was introduced in 1987 with the enrollment of 45 Standard One pupils, marking the school’s evolution into a full primary and secondary day school. Boarding was phased out over time.

Strathmore School has produced many influential alumni across diverse fields such as politics, the arts, religion, finance, and sports.
They include the 8th Vice President of Kenya, the late Michael Kijana Wamalwa, the 13th Chief Justice of Kenya, Willy Mutunga, former Minister for Education, the late George Magoha, former MP and Minister for Industrialization Henry Kosgey, and the Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Nyeri Anthony Muheria.
Others include the late billionaire Christopher Kirubi, the 9th Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya Patrick Njoroge, musician David Mathenge, popularly known as Nameless, and award-winning investigative journalist John-Allan Namu.
Performance
Today, Strathmore offers both the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), aligning with the ongoing national curriculum reforms.
KCSE is being gradually phased out, with only the current Form 2 and Form 3 students still following it.

By 2027, KCSE will be fully retired, while the CBC, now in its ninth year, will see its first Grade 12 graduates in 2028.
Strathmore has maintained a reputation for academic excellence. In the 2024 KCSE exams, the school posted an impressive mean score of 10.087, a slight increase from 10.080 in 2023.
Notable subject performances included: Computer Studies (12.00); French (11.29); Kiswahili (10.74); English (10.52); Mathematics (10.51) and Biology (10.33).
An outstanding 20 students scored an average Grade A (plain), underlining the school’s consistent academic strength.
School Fees
Strathmore School admits students from diverse backgrounds. All applicants are required to sit for a written entrance examination.
The Admissions Committee selects students who not only demonstrate the ability to meet the school’s rigorous academic standards but also show potential to become active and productive members of the school community.
Although Strathmore’s full and current fee structure is not publicly available, new applicants are required to pay a non-refundable admission fee of at least Ksh2,000.
