Kenyan diplomat Benson H.O. Ogutu has been honoured by the Government of Japan for his outstanding contribution to deepening ties between Nairobi and Tokyo.
In a statement released on Wednesday, April 29, the Embassy of Japan in Kenya announced that the prestigious Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star has been conferred on Ambassador Ogutu, who previously served as Kenya’s Ambassador to Japan.
“The Government of Japan announced on April 29th that the Government has conferred a decoration, The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star, on Ambassador Benson H.O. Ogutu, Former Ambassador of Kenya to Japan for his invaluable contribution to strengthening bilateral relations and promoting friendship between Japan and the Republic of Kenya,” the statement read.

The Order of the Rising Sun is one of Japan’s most distinguished national honours. Established in 1875 by Emperor Meiji, it was the first official decoration awarded by the Japanese government.

The decoration features rays of sunlight emanating from the rising sun—a symbol of vitality and energy—as well as attachments shaped into paulownia flowers and leaves, which are associated with tradition and honor in Japanese culture.
In addition, the award is typically reserved for individuals who have rendered distinguished service to the state, particularly in areas such as international relations, public service, culture, and economic cooperation—excluding military service.
Ambassador Ogutu was honored with the Order following his tenure as Kenya’s Ambassador to Japan in 2010, during which he significantly enhanced cooperation across areas such as trade, investment, culture, science, and technology.
The diplomat is among the diplomats who have represented Kenya at the Embassy of the Republic of Kenya in Japan which was established in 1979.
The Embassy plays a critical role in forging closer relations between the two nations.
According to its official mission, the Embassy seeks to deepen cooperation by promoting mutual understanding through cultural exchange, public diplomacy, and economic engagement.

It actively hosts cultural events, lectures, and trade seminars, often featuring Kenyan cuisine, music, dance, and products to showcase the country’s rich heritage.

Its service charter emphasizes raising awareness of the services offered, defining performance standards, and guiding the rights and responsibilities of both the Embassy and the public. These efforts aim to promote transparency, effectiveness, and stronger people-to-people ties.
Ambassador Ogutu led the mission in promoting Kenya’s image abroad, strengthening cultural diplomacy, and attracting investment by marketing Kenya as a strategic hub for East and Central Africa.
Through his leadership, the Embassy participated in numerous Japanese festivals and events, advancing sports diplomacy and expanding opportunities for Kenyan products in the Japanese market.
Beyond Tokyo, Ambassador Ogutu also served as Kenya’s envoy to the Russian Federation. He presented his credentials to President Vladimir Putin in 2021 during a ceremony held at the Grand Kremlin Palace’s Alexander Hall, joining 22 other newly appointed ambassadors.
