On September 30, Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi appointed Edward Mwirigi Kinyua as Director General of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).
He assumes the position following the departure of former Director General Daniel Kiptoo and a period of interim leadership under Dr. Joseph Oketch. He previously served as EPRA’s Director of Petroleum and Gas.
As Director General, Kinyua will serve as EPRA’s chief executive and accounting officer, overseeing the authority’s day-to-day operations and administration.
His responsibilities will include implementing strategic decisions, regulations and policies approved by the EPRA Board. He will also oversee the regulation of Kenya’s electricity, petroleum and renewable energy sectors, including licensing and tariff setting.
Kinyua will coordinate between the EPRA Board and the authority’s staff and administrative structures while ensuring financial accountability, compliance with governance requirements and proper management of EPRA’s resources.
Edward Mwirigi Kinyua Career Background
Edward Mwirigi Kinyua has built a career spanning petroleum regulation, engineering and logistics.
He has served as Director of Petroleum and Gas at EPRA since August 2019, providing strategic leadership in the technical and economic regulation of Kenya’s petroleum sector.
Before joining EPRA, Kinyua worked at the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), where he served as Acting Director of Petroleum from April 2015 to July 2019 and Senior Manager, Petroleum from October 2014 to April 2015.
His responsibilities included petroleum regulation and enforcement, developing industry standards, licensing, infrastructure inspections, petroleum pricing, and reviewing proposed petroleum infrastructure designs.

He previously served as a Technical Officer, Petroleum at the ERC from February 2010 to September 2014.
Kinyua also worked at Total Kenya Limited, where he was an LPG Supervisor from September 2009 to January 2010 and a Lubricants Logistics Officer from December 2007 to August 2009.
Earlier in his career, he worked as a Quality Assurance Trainee Engineer at Mabati Rolling Mills from April 2006 to November 2007, before serving as a Workshop Supervisor at Friendly Autoworks in Mombasa from October 2005 to March 2006.

Educational Background
Kinyua holds a Master of Science in Energy Management from the University of Nairobi, which he pursued between 2012 and 2016.
He also holds a Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical and Production Engineering from Moi University, completed between 2000 and 2005, where he graduated with Second Class Honours, Upper Division.
Earlier, he studied Certified Public Accountant Part 1 (CPA 1) in Accounting at Strathmore College of Accountancy between 1999 and 2000, covering areas including financial accounting, law and business finance.
He is a registered professional Engineer with the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) and is a corporate member of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK).
