Joshua Irungu Wakahora is the current and first governor of Laikipia County, Kenya, serving his second non-consecutive term after being re-elected in 2022.
He first served as governor from 2013 to 2017, elected under the National Alliance (TNA) party, and reclaimed the seat in 2022, running on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.
Irungu was born on February 2, 1970.

Joshua Irungu attended Egerton University, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resource Management, followed by a master’s degree in Agriculture and Rural Development.
Career Life
Irungu began his career in public service as the Divisional Agricultural and Livestock Extension Officer for Laikipia West and Nyahururu divisions, working for Kenya’s Ministry of Agriculture until the year 2000.
He then joined USAID, where he coordinated the International Small Group and Tree Planting Programme (ISGTPP) and later served as Program Coordinator for SARDEP, overseeing semi-arid lands development in Laikipia from 1999 to 2002.
In 2019, he was appointed Chairperson of the Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB).

Joshua Irungu was elected as the first Governor of Laikipia County in 2013, serving until 2017 under the National Alliance (TNA) party, after Kenya’s devolved system launch.
He returned to office, winning reelection in 2022 under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
