Agnes Pareiyo is a women’s rights activist and Kenyan politician serving as the Member of Parliament for Narok North Constituency.

Early life and educational Background

Agnes Pareiyo was born to a village chief on 24 June 1956 in Enaibor Ajijik village, Narok District, Kenya.

Her father initially resisted the tradition of FGM, but eventually succumbed to community pressure, and she got married at the age of 18.

She began her educational journey at Ole Sankale Primary School in 1964, where she earned her Certificate of Primary Education in 1970, at a time when opportunities for Maasai girls to attend school were still limited.

In 1971, she joined Kilgoris Secondary School, where she undertook her secondary education until 1973.

Her education was briefly interrupted, but she later enrolled as a private candidate at Narok Secondary School, where she successfully obtained her Kenya Certificate of Education in 1974.

From 2009 to 2011, she pursued a Diploma in Community Development and Social Work at Premese College, strengthening her knowledge in grassroots development and women’s empowerment.

In 2013, she enrolled at the Kenya Institute of Management (KIM), where she undertook a Certificate in Strategic Management.

Career

Professional career

Pareyio began her public life in 1984 when she was appointed District Coordinator for Maendeleo Ya Wanawake in Narok.

She held this position until 1985, working closely with women’s groups to promote economic empowerment and awareness on social issues affecting women in pastoralist communities.

This role marked the start of her lifelong campaign against female genital mutilation (FGM).

From 1988 to 1997, she entered local governance as a Nominated Councillor in the Narok County Council.

Her nine years in this role allowed her to influence local development policies and champion gender equality within a male-dominated political space.

In 2002, she rose to the position of Vice-Chairperson of the Narok County Council, a position she held until 2012.

Pareyio transitioned in her career path and served as a Director of the Narok Water and Sewerage Company from 2007 to 2012.

Her activism gained international recognition in 2005, when she was named United Nations Person of the Year in Kenya, honoring her work in women’s rights and her tireless campaigns against FGM.

In 2013, Agnes Pareiyo was appointed as a Board Member of the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA).

In 2018, Agnes Pareiyo became the Chairperson of the Anti-FGM Board of Kenya, a role she held till 2022.

Political career

Her transition into national politics came in 2022, when she contested and won the Narok North Constituency parliamentary seat under the Jubilee Party, making history as the first woman to represent the constituency in the National Assembly.

In her current role as a legislator in the Kenyan 13th Parliament, she serves on committees and continues to advocate for women’s rights, education, and community development.

However, she earns a gross salary of Ksh739,600 as a Member of Parliament.

This includes a Basic Salary of Ksh443,760, House Allowance of Ksh150,000, and Salary Market Adjustment of Ksh145,840.

Agnes Pareiyo also earns Ksh7,500 per sitting, up to a maximum of Ksh120,000 monthly.

Additionally, she is entitled to a Mileage Allowance of Ksh116.63 per kilometre, capped at Ksh353,778 monthly, a Car Maintenance Allowance of Ksh356,525 monthly, and an Airtime Allowance of Ksh15,000 monthly.
