OCCUPATION POLITICIAN

Karen Nyamu Njeri is a Kenyan politician and a Nominated Senator in the 13th Parliament under the Kenya Kwanza government.

Early life and education

Karen Nyamu was born in Nairobi’s Eastlands area and raised in a family that placed great emphasis on education.

Her father worked as a civil engineer while her mother was an early childhood education teacher.

She began her primary education at Riverbank Primary School in Ngara, Nairobi, where she studied from 1992 to 1997, before transferring to Kamuthatha Boarding Primary School in Embu for her upper primary years.

She sat her Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams in 1998, achieving a strong performance that enabled her to join a leading girls’ secondary school.

In 1999, she enrolled at Limuru Girls High School, where she completed her secondary education and sat for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 2002.

Upon completing high school, Karen was admitted to the University of Nairobi to study law. She pursued a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree between 2003 and 2006, immersing herself in constitutional and commercial law studies.

After graduating, she proceeded to the Kenya School of Law, where she completed her Diploma in Law and was subsequently admitted to the Bar of Kenya as an Advocate of the High Court in 2007.

Later in her academic journey, Karen advanced her studies by pursuing a Master’s degree in International Relations, broadening her expertise in governance, diplomacy, and international policy.

Professional Career of Karen Nyamu

After being admitted to the Bar of Kenya in 2007, Karen Nyamu began her career as a practicing advocate.

She initially worked with established law firms in Nairobi, gaining experience in litigation, corporate law, and constitutional matters.

In 2010, Karen Nyamu founded Njeri Nyamu & Company Advocates, a Nairobi-based law firm where she has served as Managing Partner.

Under her leadership, the firm grew to specialize in commercial law, property transactions, corporate governance, and public policy advisory services.

Through this platform, she provided legal representation to individuals, businesses, and community organizations, earning a reputation as a formidable advocate with a deep understanding of the law.

Her work in the legal field extended beyond courtroom practice. Between 2013 and 2017, while running her firm, she became actively involved in public service, offering pro bono legal support to community groups, particularly those focused on women’s rights, youth empowerment, and access to justice.

In 2019, Karen Nyamu was appointed as a Director of the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company, a key role in which she contributed to governance reforms and institutional strengthening in one of Nairobi’s critical public utilities.

By 2020, she had built a career that combined legal expertise, corporate governance experience, and community advocacy.

Political Career

Karen Nyamu began her political journey in 2013, contesting for the position of Member of the Nairobi County Assembly (MCA) for Nairobi County on a The National Alliance (TNA) party ticket.

She won the election, becoming one of the young female leaders in the newly established devolved government system under Kenya’s 2010 Constitution.

In 2017, Karen sought to elevate her political career by contesting for the Nairobi Woman Representative seat under the Jubilee Party.

Despite a spirited campaign, she did not win the election but solidified her political base and continued to grow her influence within Nairobi’s political circles.

Following her 2017 electoral bid, Karen remained active in governance and community engagement.

In 2020, she was appointed by then-Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko to serve as a County Executive Committee (CEC) Member for the Agriculture and Environment docket.

In this role, she oversaw key initiatives related to food security, agricultural policy, and environmental sustainability within Nairobi County.

Ahead of the 2022 General Election, Karen joined the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), a key party within the Kenya Kwanza coalition led by President William Ruto.

She was placed on UDA’s party list and, in July 2022, was nominated to the Senate to represent women and marginalized groups. She was officially sworn in as a Nominated Senator on 16 August 2022.

In the 13th Parliament, Karen has been actively involved in legislative work and committee leadership.

Karen Nyamu was appointed as a member of the Justice, Legal Affairs and Human Rights Committee, the Energy Committee, and the Senate Business Committee.
