Many musicians find their breakthrough in the industry through different paths. For Ken Wa Maria, the road to the Kamba music spotlight was far from straightforward.

Before becoming one of the most recognizable names in Eastern Benga, he hustled in Nairobi, worked casual jobs, and sold second-hand clothes at Gikomba Market.

His eventual rise was built on persistence, education, musical experimentation, and a strong understanding of his audience.

Ken Wa Maria: Early Life and Education

Ken Wa Maria was born Kennedy Wambua Ngunze in Machakos, from a family of four. His musical journey began in the Catholic Church, where he sang in the choir.

An Italian priest introduced him and other young people to musical instruments and basic music training, giving him an early foundation.

Kennedy attended Kangaru High School for secondary school. After completing high school, Ngunze moved to Nairobi in search of opportunities. His first experiences in the capital were about survival, not entertainment. He worked in the jua kali sector, became a casual laborer in factories in Athi River, and later ventured into the second-hand clothes business at Gikomba Market.

Gikomba became an important chapter in his story. In an interview with The Standard, Ken Wa Maria said his interest in fashion was partly shaped by his experience shopping for clothes at the market. He saw the distinctive second-hand clothing there and used it to develop his own identity and style.

His life, however, was not limited to business and hustling. He pursued higher education at the University of Nairobi, where he studied Business Statistics. He then obtained his master’s from Strathmore University.

From Gikomba to the Music Industry

Having grown up around music and developed an interest in performing, Ken Wa Maria eventually turned his attention towards professional music.

He chose to sing largely in Kamba, targeting an audience that connected with the language, culture, and everyday experiences reflected in his songs.

His professional music journey gained momentum in the 2000s. In 2004, he released his debut album, “We Nzamithya Mwelu”.

Ken Wa Maria was also building his own musical organization. His band, initially known as Yatta Boys Band, later became Yatta Orchestra International. Through the group, he developed a sound that blended Kamba musical traditions with his own approach to Benga performance.

His rise coincided with a period when regional musicians were developing alternative distribution and performance networks outside Kenya’s conventional mainstream entertainment industry.

River Road-based studios and distributors played an important role in producing and circulating music, allowing musicians such as Ken Wa Maria to reach audiences across the country.

His career came with “Fundamentals,” a song that became a major hit in the early 2010s. In December 2013, the song gained popularity and drew attention in Kenya’s entertainment scene.

The song’s success transformed his profile. Ken Wa Maria moved from a prominent Kamba performer to an artiste recognized well beyond the traditional Kamba music audience.

He explained that he researched Benga and favored a slower beat that made the music more accessible and danceable. He also emphasized professionalism, branding, and presentation among musicians.

Yatta Orchestra, his band, became a platform for other performers. He has mentored and helped develop other Kamba musicians.

His music has also frequently touched on politics, relationships, humor, and social issues. This eventually extended into direct political involvement, with Ken Wa Maria later seeking an elective political position after becoming established in the entertainment industry.

Family and Business Ventures

Ken Wa Maria has generally kept his family life away from the public eye. He is married to Angela Wambua, and they have two children, Pauline and Stacy.

Ken Wa Maria’s wealth comes from his music career and investments outside entertainment.

He has previously said that he has been involved in the automobile business, including selling vehicles for many years. He also has business interests across the region, including a truck freight business in East Africa and poultry farming. He also said he had business interests in Malindi.

The benga artist also has several matatus operating on Ukambani routes, a garage in Nairobi’s Umoja area, a music shop, and property investments. He owns several high-profile vehicles, including a Toyota Land Cruiser, Range Rover, and Mercedes-Benz

His music remains an important source of income. Ken Wa Maria established and led Yatta Orchestra International, which has provided a platform for his performances where he could charge more than KSh100,000 per performance.
