Sam Mburu: Susan Kihika’s Tycoon Husband and His Business Interests

Sam Mburu is a Kenyan businessman popularly known as ‘Kiongozi’ and the husband of Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika.

The couple tied the knot in a traditional ceremony in Nyahururu on November 7, 2020, an event attended by President William Ruto (then Kenya’s Deputy President).

In 2025, the couple joyfully welcomed twins into their family. Photos of Susan Kihika with the twins surafced on social media on Friday, April 11, sending Kenyans into a frenzy.

Early Life

Sam Mburu was born and raised in Solai, Nakuru County. His parents ran a charcoal-burning business when he was growing up, which sustained the family.

Mburu attended Mosocho Academy in Kisii County before enrolling at Cardinal Otunga High School – Mosocho, where he studied between 1997 and 1998.

He began his entrepreneurial journey as a soft drink distributor in Nakuru.

Over time, he expanded his business ventures, becoming a significant figure in Nakuru’s business community.

Mburu is the founder and director of Landmark Freight Services, a clearing and forwarding company based in Mombasa with branches in China.

The company has over the years grown to be among leading clearing and forwarding companies in Kenya.

Besides the freight service business, Sam Mburu has interest in other sectors and is linked to multimillion-shillings worth of assets, which include apartments in Nakuru, Nairobi, Kajiado, and Mombasa, along with a collection of luxury vehicles.

Mburu and Politics

Sam is known to be a close associate of President William Ruto and was actively involved in the United Republican Party’s (URP) campaigns back in 2013.

He played a role in establishing a youth league in Nairobi, which was later integrated into Uhuru and Ruto’s presidential campaigns.

In 2022, Mburu played an integral part in the campaigns of his spouse Susan Kihika who went on to win the gubernatorial election and become Nakuru City’s third governor.

Kihika, at the time, had a well-oiled campaign characterized by class and use of luxurious cars.

In 2007, he worked with William Ruto when he was still under Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, where he worked with the late Raila Odinga’a son Fidel Odinga, and Oscar Sudi.
