Kabarak University is a private chartered institution of higher learning located in Kabarak, Nakuru County, approximately 20 kilometres north of Nakuru City along the Nakuru–Eldama Ravine Road.
The main campus sits within the expansive Kabarak area, historically known as the home of Kenya’s second president, the late Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi.
In addition to the main campus, the University operates specialised campuses in Nakuru Town and Eldoret, supporting its law, health sciences, and professional programmes.
Kabarak University Founder
Kabarak University was founded by Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi, Kenya’s second president from 1978 to 2002.
Kabarak, originally part of the colonial White Highlands in the Rift Valley, served as rural farmland owned by white settlers for ranching and agriculture until 1970.
Moi acquired the expansive 3,000-acre Kabarak farm from a settler, transforming it into his private residence and political hub during his presidency.
In 1970, Moi built Kabarak High School on the land, elevating it to a top national performer; he founded Kabarak University in 2000, envisioning a Christian institution emphasising moral values and quality education.
History
The institution received a Letter of Interim Authority from the Commission for Higher Education in October 2000, enabling it to commence operations as a private Christian university focused on quality education and moral principles.
It admitted its first students in September 2002 and gained full university charter status on May 16, 2008, awarded by then-President Mwai Kibaki.

Growth spurred housing, businesses, and infrastructure, with over 12,000 students today; a Sh35 billion teaching hospital is planned on 100 acres.
In 2003, rancher Malcolm Bell sued Daniel Moi over a 100-acre Kabarak farm, alleging coercion in a failed 1980s deal in which Moi reneged on promised infrastructure, including a borehole, electricity, and a cattle dip.
The High Court ruled in Moi’s favor in 2005 on the basis of adverse possession, affirming his control.
On August 9, 2012, the Court of Appeal (Justices Koome and Okwengu JJA) overturned this, ordering Moi to vacate the 100-acre land within six months of harvesting the crops, reverting title to Bell.
Moi served as the founding chancellor until his death in 2020, and the university, located in Kabarak, Nakuru County, expanded into schools such as health sciences and a planned referral hospital.
