Winnie Mutheu is a contractor overseeing the South B modern market construction project, valued at hundreds of millions of shillings.
During the commissioning of graduate interns at State House on January 23, President William Ruto commended Winnie Mutheu for the good work on the South B Market project.
Mutheu’s journey is extraordinary, as she has no formal background in engineering.
At the commissioning, Mutheu shared her remarkable journey of resilience, which has culminated in her becoming a shareholder in a construction company.
She began her career in 2009 as a casual labourer in West Pokot after completing her O-level education.
Coming from a humble background, she gradually rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a supervisor of her colleagues, including during assignments in West Pokot.
Mutheu shared that her experience has primarily been gained through on-site work, including plumbing, masonry, roofing, and structural work.
How Much Winnie Mutheu Handles
She revealed that she is currently managing a Ksh332 million project, backed by a Ksh35 million overdraft facility from the National Bank.
Mutheu is the contractor behind several projects, including the Homa Bay County Fish Market, the South B Market in Nairobi, which she said is expected to be completed by March, and the Kapsabet project.

According to project details, some of her sites operate on a 24-hour schedule in line with the government’s push for a night economy.
She is currently overseeing a Ksh332 million project, supported by a Ksh35 million overdraft facility from the National Bank.
The project employs 452 people and has 12 machines on site, including concrete mixers and other construction equipment. About 70 workers operate during night shifts.

South B Market Construction
In December 2025, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo gave an update on the South B Modern Market project.
He stated that the multi-storey market is designed to accommodate 1,050 traders.
Construction is ongoing around the clock, with 53 workers on site during the day and 81 at night, many of whom are youth and women.
Beyond the physical development, the project is already providing tangible socio-economic benefits to the surrounding community.
He added that ongoing casting works have increased the workforce to about 450 people, including supervisors.
The construction contract for the South B Market has been awarded to Jyan Construction Services.
