Kenyan companies make up 11 of the East African region’s top 20 companies, according to the 2025 African Business ranking.

According to the report, these companies have helped push the total value of East African firms on the list from Ksh2.4 Trillion ($18.3 billion) in 2024 to Ksh3 trillion ($20.8 billion) in 2025, driven largely by a $1.6 billion rise in the valuation of Kenyan companies.

Although the region remains underrepresented in Africa’s Top 250 companies when compared to its population, there is progress.

Safaricom remains the largest company in East Africa by far, with a market cap more than three times that of its closest telecom rival, MTN Uganda.

In September 2024, Safaricom raised Ksh15 billion ($116 million) through a second sustainability-linked loan tranche, supported by local giants Absa, KCB, Standard Chartered Kenya, and Stanbic.

The funds are meant to partly go towards switching its energy use from diesel to renewables, reinforcing its commitment to green business.

Other Kenyan Companies on the List

Other top-ranking Kenyan companies include Equity Group, East African Breweries, KCB Group, and Standard Chartered Bank Kenya, all of which appear in the top 10.

At the same time, Kenyan companies dominate the banking sector with major lenders like Absa Bank Kenya, Co-operative Bank, NCBA Group, Stanbic Kenya, and I&M Group making the cut.

On the other hand, Kenya also featured in sectors like food distribution and tobacco, with East African Breweries and British American Tobacco Kenya PLC representing.

The top ten companies in the 2025 Africa are led by Naspers, which has a market capitalization of $40.3 billion, up from $31.9 billion in 2024.

Much of this volatility comes from shifts in the value of one of its key assets: a 25% stake in Hong Kong-listed tech and entertainment giant Tencent.

Despite Naspers’ relatively limited operations in South Africa today, its reach spans technology, venture capital, publishing, and multimedia.

Furthermore, Naspers is followed by another five South African companies, including three banks: FirstRand, Standard Bank Group and Capitec Bank.

However, it is still worth almost twice as much as the second-placed FirstRand, which had a value of $21.9bn at the end of March.
