The Numbers Behind The 2026/27 Sportpesa League Power Rankings

Gor Mahia enters the 2026/27 SportPesa League season as the statistical benchmark after finishing last season with 69 points, 20 wins, and a +28 goal difference.

AFC Leopards followed with 64 points, while Kenya Police, Nairobi United, and Shabana formed a chasing group that showed how competitive the league could become again.

The league season is set to commence on August 22, 2026, so the figures from last season can provide useful background data for assessing the teams that will participate in the new season.

Gor Mahia topped the SportPesa League 2025/26 after earning 69 points out of 34 games. AFC Leopards were next with 64 points, followed by Kenya Police FC third with 55 points, Nairobi United on 53 points, and Shabana with 52 points.

The standings also show how competitive the race was beyond the top two, with several clubs separated by only a few points.

Gor Mahia set the statistical benchmark

Gor Mahia’s strongest statistical case from last season came from their overall consistency, finishing with 20 wins, nine draws, and five defeats. They scored 50 goals, and 22 goals were conceded for a goal difference of +28, the best in the division. The figures provide a strong statistical foundation for the reigning champions as they look to defend their position at the top of the league.

The numbers also show the champions weren’t just strong in one area; they were effective on both ends of the pitch. They scored an average of nearly 1.5 goals per match, and they conceded less than one goal per match across the 34-game campaign. If points, attacking output, and defensive control are key measures of a club’s strength, Gor Mahia enters the new 2026/27 SportPesa League season with a strong benchmark.

AFC Leopards behind the champions

AFC Leopards provide the closest statistical challenge after finishing second with 64 points, five points behind the champions. They won 19 games, drew seven, lost 8 matches, and scored 44 goals while conceding 28, for a +16 goal difference.

Their 19 victories underline the strength of their campaign, although Gor Mahia’s greater consistency ultimately gave the champions the advantage.

The next positions reveal an even tighter contest among the clubs chasing the top two. Kenya Police FC were third with 55 points, Nairobi United on 53, Shabana on 52, and Kakamega Homeboyz three points further back with 49.

Six clubs all had a 20-point range to the champion, which could mean we will see a tight top ten battle again when the season gets underway as teams look to small differences in both performance and scorelines to make big strides at the top of the SportPesa League table.

Goals and defense shape the power rankings

Attacking output offers another useful measure when comparing clubs before a new campaign begins. Goals scored, goals conceded, and goal difference provide a record of how teams perform across matches, while the accumulation of these figures over time makes it possible to identify consistency rather than relying on one standout result.

Nairobi United and AFC Leopards each scored 44 goals, while Gor Mahia led the group with 50, giving the previous season’s statistics a useful baseline for measuring performances in the new campaign.

The defensive side of the game is also significant, particularly when assessing how consistently teams perform in difficult matches. The leading clubs also posted strong defensive records, with Gor Mahia conceding 22 goals, Kenya Police 21, and AFC Leopards 28.

The difference between the top of the table and the bottom was stark as well, with Sofapaka allowing 51 goals to opponents while Gor Mahia conceded only 22 goals in 34 matches played, highlighting the significant defensive gap between the strongest and weakest teams in the division.

What data could mean for the 2026/27 season?

The previous campaign provides several useful markers for assessing early club power rankings, but not a final prediction for the 2026/27 table. The rankings are built from match and season performance figures such as points earned, wins, draws, defeats, goals scored, goals conceded, and goal difference, allowing clubs to be compared using results accumulated across the campaign.

Gor Mahia therefore posted the strongest overall statistical profile, while AFC Leopards, Kenya Police, Nairobi United, Shabana, and Kakamega Homeboyz also recorded numbers that provide an early reference point for the new season.

In Kenyan football, stats are more than a league table because match performances help identify consistent players for monthly awards and build a complete profile of each player to use when deciding who qualifies for the SportPesa League Gala Awards.

The 2026/27 season will see 18 clubs go head to head, with new performances giving new data as the campaign progresses. This can change the early pecking order of the season and provide a statistical record of the players, coaches and clubs who are conspicuous throughout the season.

Conclusion

As the SportPesa League enters a new campaign backed by the SportPesa-FKF partnership, data-led coverage gives fans another way to understand the title race beyond weekly results.

Gor Mahia finished with 69 points and a +28 goal difference to set the early pace.

AFC Leopards, with 64 points and 19 wins, proved they can be a force to reckon with among the top teams. The 2026/27 season will continue to provide new performance data that will shape the standings and provide a record of the individual and coaching performances that can shape monthly recognition and the Gala Awards.
