299 Chama Members Conned in Ksh4.5 billion Land Investment

A group of 299 members from a self-help investment group (chama) in Kajiado County has fallen victim to a Ksh4.5 billion land scam orchestrated by one of their own.

Speaking to the press on Tuesday, January 21, the members of the Embolioi Group revealed that an excommunicated member was behind the scam.

Further, the Isinya, Kajiado County-based group explained that the member, whose identity was undisclosed conspired to illegally transfer ownership of over 200 acres of prime land into his name.

Additionally, he has been trying to sell the subdivided plots to unsuspecting individuals.

Therefore, the group has appealed to members of the public to refrain from buying the land, and only do so at their own risk.

“We have put up a clear signage here that this land is not for sale. So if you decide to buy any piece of this land, it is at your loss. Any deal involving this land is a losing deal. The members do not want to sell it” Richard ole Temebr, a member of the Chama said.

Chama Accuses County Government of the Scam

The members, who had collectively invested substantial sums with hopes of passing the land to future generations, expressed their devastation and outrage at the betrayal.

According to the group, the ex-member worked in collaboration with individuals within the Kajiado County Government to facilitate fraudulent transactions involving the land.

“We want to call on Governor Ole Lenku, to come before us and make it clear that you are not involved in this. because the official papers some from the county government.”

“And we want to make it clear that this piece of land does not belong to the county government,” another member stated.

Response From the County Government

On the other hand, the Kajiado County Government has taken a different stance.

Hamilton Parsania, Kajiado land minister in an official statement, declared that the land in question is public property and does not belong to any individual or private group.

However, he refuted claims that the county government was involved in any fraudulent issuance of certification.
