Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, has emerged as a top destination for startups investments, marking its place among the global leaders in innovation and entrepreneurship.
This ranking highlights Nairobi’s dynamic startup ecosystem, supportive policies, and a robust economic environment.
Global Startup Ecosystem Index report stated that “Nairobi has climbed 24 places on the startup-friendly city index to position 113 globally, up from 137th last year, making it an attractive destination for startup investments.”
According to the latest Global Startup Ecosystem Index report, five notable startups were among the reasons that propelled Nairobi to the forefront of the global stage.
The report mentioned M-Pesa, M-Kopa, Cellulant, Wasoko and Sistema.bio as the top notable startups in Kenya.
On the other hand, the 2013 launch of Konza Technopolis, a tech hub outside Nairobi, and the Kenya National Innovation Agency (KeNIA) have spearheaded numerous initiatives, including the development of a National Innovation Master Plan.
Dr. Tonny Omwansa, CEO of KeNIA, expressed his happiness for Nairobi’s rising status.
“We are thrilled that Nairobi has seen significant growth in its ranking in the 2024 Startup Blink report, reflecting the city’s dynamic innovation and entrepreneurial spirit,” Omwansa said.
“KeNIA is proud of these achievements and remains committed to fostering a thriving environment for startups across Kenya.” he added.
Innovations
Notably, the success of M-Pesa and other fintech innovations also solidified the country’s pioneering status on the continent.
The upcoming enactment of the Kenya Startup Bill in 2024 further demonstrates the government’s commitment to fostering a business-friendly environment.
Nairobi’s appeal to tech startups is also bolstered by the presence of global tech giants such as Google, Microsoft, Samsung, and Intel.

“Accelerators like Antler and Pangea Accelerator, along with support organizations like the Association of Startup and SMEs Enablers of Kenya (ASSEK) and Growth Africa, have created a thriving ecosystem,” the report read.

Despite Nairobi’s impressive lead, challenges such as limited mentorship programs, inadequate infrastructure, and restricted access to funding remain a concern.
However, with a population of just over 50 million, Kenya’s startups are increasingly focusing on regional and global markets to achieve sustainable growth.
In addition, Nairobi excelled in the Clean Energy industry, securing the top spot in Africa and replacing Cape Town in third place.
Although Mombasa dropped out of the global top 1,000 cities, Kisumu’s debut at 985th globally ensured Kenya’s continued representation.
